Painting a P5

You should paint it like this:

Oh yeah!

OH MY GAWD>>>THATS SO RICE......oh wait thats my car....

BTW, thats not paint...its vinyl...get over yourselves people.

At any rate to the OP and for those of you who may not know. There is no color on the planet that will "bleed" thru unless the surface has not been properly prepped or you are painting directly over lacquer or acrylic based paints. Urethanes do not have this problem and due to VOC regulations, factories must abide by these regulations and use only low VOC urethanes. So if its factory paint, there are no worries. Todays sealers provide a great hiding color in various shades of grays that creates a perfect substrate in which to apply any color. They also lock down anything underneath as well. No decent bodyshop would ever repaint a car without using some type of primer/sealer unless the paint is fresh and new. Laying a couple coats of black sealer or base will hide that yellow in no time.

Expect to spend 2k to 4k for a factory/show car finish.

Most bodyshops in my area are hurting for work so you might be able to strike a deal if your area is experiencing a drought as well.

Oh and about using a roller on a car...it sounds nasty but I have seen some amazing backyard paintjobs that you would never guess were done with a roller. Lots of Rustoleum, mineral spirits, and patience(each coat needed to dry 24 hours before recoating then the entire car is wet sanded and buffed after about a week).

Heh, I was planning on using an air gun w/ compressor :X

a nice compresson can be had on craigslist for about $150 (I'm going to try to 'borrow' one from someone and pay them like $$ for the time I use it)

a cheap spray gun will be good enough for spraying a single car = $50

PVC pipe or any cheap poles or wood can be used to make a tent out of. get some tarps to throw over it and tape them on.

Thats $200+paint$ + some hard work and your all set.

Assuming you have a sander etc. in your garage already.

Whats the difference between a dual action sander and a normal electric sander???

DA sander rotates and vibrates, typical sander just vibrates which causes uneven sanding patterns.

you need a lot more than 200 to set up a proper prep and paint setup. sanding blocks, sandpaper, prep supplies... can you do it cheaper thank 2K? yes. can you do if for 200? no.

yeah, 2 to 4k sounds about right. yellow is one of the hardest colors to cover up. there are only a few options when doing it. you can either strip it off (time comsuming = high labor costs) or a couple coats of primer/sealer (very expensive). the reason being is yellow bleeds through almost everything.

i dont know where u go that info! one coat of white base would do the job! or one coat of sealer! but yah a good paint job especially custom will cost u somewhere along the lines of 5k

I got that info from having to paint a taxi last year. It took 2 coats of primer/sealer for it to stop bleeding through. I did one coat and then sprayed white over it, 3 days later the customer came back and you could see that the white had started getting quite yellow and not the normal die back you get from paint, but actually yellow. So I sanded it down and then did 2 coats of the primer/sealer and then the white. But like I said in my post, using a good prime/sealer will do the job, but it's not the cheapest stuff in the world.

And I'm sure someone will ask, I was using dupont products on the taxi.
