Painted hub, no more rust

I took JohnnyMiata's advice (http://protege5.com/vbb225/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18819&highlight=paint+hub) and decided to get rid of all that ugly rust behind my wheels. Boy, what a difference! Here's a couple of before/after pics.

It was really easy. You don't have to worry about getting paint on the rotor because as soon as you step on the the brakes, they clean the rotors for you! I just brushed the paint on with a sponge-brush, so I wouldn't have to worry about over-spray.

I wouldn't get paint on the brake pads. I hear it seriously affects braking performance

hmmmm.
I didn't paint the brake pads, but a little dry paint probably got on em when I stopped the first time. Do you think I should pop the wheels off and check it out?


EDIT: After a couple days of "spirited" driving, I've felt NO ill effects at all. 100% stoked on my silver hubs!

What kind of paint (brand / color)?

And what grit sandpaper did you use, was it a sanding machine or hand sandpaper?

cool man, ive done the same on my MSP. i used 500 degree "Aluminum" duplicolor. it looks so much better, but the rotors themselves still look like s*** after a rainy day

I gaurentee you it won't last. Unfortunately. (notcool) I re-painted mine about 6 months ago, and now they look like crap again. You need to get some of the rotors that KYMP5's shop sells. Those are hella nice. Gaurenteed not to rust.

Did you primer them first? If not, the paint will not bond well to the surface. I am planning on doing this as well, and sanding them down first for a smooth appearance.

I used 1200 degree paint. I sanded down the hubs using a wire wheel on a drill. Did not prime them. Been thru a few rainy days and washes and they still look fine. If I have to do that once a year even, no big deal. Cheaper than replacing all the rotors!

Guy at the brake shop I went to said to primer them, then paint em. He has painted them for people.

He doesn't have them on the site yet. If you PM him he'll hook you up. They are made by Ractive, here's what the catalog says:

And let me just say these thing look ******* sweet.

IIRC he said he'd sell them to forum members for something like $50 apeice.

what are some good places in Chicago to get some aftermarket rotor's for the p5? i did the whole sanding, primer/painting thing on my camry and id rather not do it again cause it just starts looking like crap again anyways sooner or later...
