P5 v. Lancer

I thought this was pretty cool, so I had to share it with you guys. I was on the highway the other day, clipping along at about 70, when a new Lancer with an exhaust system and rims starts coming up on my ass hard. He weaves lanes, and goes by me.

Now I am in my P5 w/ my girlfriend, and I look at her, and say "He's Done!" ... She rolls her eyes. I step on it, and catch up to him, about 85. I switch to the right lane, which he proceeds to change into as my front fender is at his rear door, so I swerve on to the shoulder, drop it into 3rd, and mat it. I could hear him downshift too, and his exhaust gets really loud. I pass him out, and am losing him by almost 4-5 car lenghts by the time I take the exit (at over 120). He gets off the same exit, and pulls up to me at the light. I was laughing my ass off, and he says to me "what the **** do you have in that thing?" I tell him "2 liter .He just starts shaking his head, and says " No but what's in it, I say "stock!". Still shaking his head he was like "damn, that's crazy" I laughed my ass off.

Made me feel good, and thought that you guys would like to know that our relatively heavy & with 2 occupants (compared to a Lancer with just the driver) is definately a performer in the NA SCC scene (Civics, Lancers, Neons, etc.). And he had an exhaust and most likely an intake pipe by the sound of it, and mine is as stock as the day I pulled it off the lot (even the dirty airfilter that was in the car when I bought it, I know, I need to change it!!) I love this car!!!

just goes to show you what a DOG the lancer is...lol

good kill.....

and OUR car looks 10X better than one of those things as well!!

I don't mean to sound preachy here, but I hope I'm a lot older than you Racer.

If you actually took a highway exit ramp at 120+ at night I have two things to say 1) Glad you're here to tell the tale and 2) Don't be such a dumb a$$ if you want to keep yourself and your girlfriend alive for long. An empty pop bottle in the road would have sent you into oblivion at those speeds.

Last Friday or Saturday night 3 kids died on the freeway in Houston when the driver ran his Civic off an exit ramp at 100+. He hit the divider and his car literally disintegrated. The Engine and exhaust were ripped from the car and were photographed where they were lying more than 300 feet away from the rest of the vehicle. I think I speak for everyone when I say I don't want to read any obituaries here on the P5 board. If you want to drive that fast, find a closed course and stay alive to tell us how fast you ran your car. We'll all read happilt of any "kills" you make then

It might be a "cool" story, but it's also a pretty dumb one man.

I rented a Lancer on my last trip to Atlanta so I was interested to see how it compared to the Mirage I just got rid of. Overall it didn't feel nearly as stable as my P5. Soft springs, soft damping, soft tires, etc.. Just a very floaty feel. But regarding the engine it felt a hair quicker off the line (at least comparing my auto). The torque converter on the Lancer felt like it had a slightly higher stall and came out of the hole faster. But once past about 30, I would say that the Pro definately had the edge. Overall, I like my Pro way better than the Lancer I rented. I also liked my Mirage better than the Lancer I rented. It just didn't have the look or feel of anything great. It reminded me of exactly what it was, a cheap car.

Tex, thanks for your monolouge. I know all too well, as my cousin, who was more my brother, died in October 2001 hitting a tree @ 135mph. The Mitsu he was in was sheared in half. And the driver was ejected and went thru a fence. I identified 2 of the 3 occupants that died, and we still cope with the one that survived who has a prosthetic leg. I have learned one important thing from all of this ~~ when the Good Lord wants you, he will take you. At 22 years old or 82. In your car @ 120mph, or in your sleep. I live my life, as my cousin did, to enjoy all of the time we are given on this earth. Live life to its fullest.

I agree that people shouldn't go driving around that fast. Especially people with no training in defensive and evasive driving techniques. I was taught, in an abandoned parking lot for several weeks, driving techniques by a State Police Academy driving instructor. I KNOW that I have more control over my car at 85-90 than Most people I know. And I think that the chance I take at speeds in excess of 100mph are the most controled engagements. Please refer to my post where I explain that I evade being sideswiped at almost 85 mph, without a break in stride, downshifting to 3rd, and leaving him sucking tailpipe. There was minimal traffic, dry roads, clear day.

I know that you do not mean to be preachy, I undersatand fully where you are coming from. I know you are looking out for the best. But before you criticize, and tell me tales of fatal accidents, yada, yada, yada; and then call me dumb?? OK, I will just leave it as you don't mean to be preacy.

Hey Racer, I'm Sorry man, really didn't mean it like "personally you are dumb," but I guess it had to be taken that way in this context since I was responding to your post. I was really more like thinking out loud..."Let's not be dumb eh??" I like to drive fast too, but still at 120 on an off ramp in our cars there's very little room for error. And an error would have cost you BIG time.

I did read your post about your car control and MY first reaction would've been to get into the brakes and let the knucklehead go!! If he tried to cut you off at 85 then he was pretty much a moron and in spite of your best efforts there was potential for him to screw you up. You took a big risk playing with him no matter how well you can drive.

Anyway, like I said, I'm an old guy for this board(43) and I've seen too many young guys testosterone themselves into serious trouble. Be careful buddy.

I hear ya, no problem, and thanks for looking out. You don't find people who really have any concern anymore. So I guess I just get cynical because I think people are being assholes.

For some reason, I can't get the image of this out of my head. I had an S10 Extreme pass me at ~100 on the shoulder and kick all sorts of rocks and s*** up this weekend. Luckily, I braked hard enough to keep them from destroying my windshield. Just be careful eh?? I am not here to preach or anything, so don't take it that way.

Are you in law enforcement? I was an MP in the Army and have worked as a Reserve county deputy for the past two years here in MS. Just curious as to why you took the defensive driving course I guess. I wish ours was that long. In the military it was embedded in my 6 weeks of M.O.S. school, all of about 2 days worth, and for the county it was 8 days on a closed course. I wish the general population had a course like those. Anyways, just try not to endanger anyone else in your pursuit of having a good time. *InMyBestSouthParkVoice* Mmmmmkay? :p

All very good advise.....for all it would have taken was for someone on a side street to have NOT been paying attention and pull out of a parking lot or side road onto the feeder road in front of you coming down the off ramp.....then where would you be....

Racer, all we are saying...and I believe you know this now...is "be careful out there" for its NOT your driving ability that will get you hurt...its the other persons LACK there of that will.

:{D

I have 3 uncles who are sargeants in local police departments, and several friends who are officers. I however, am not in Law Enforcement. An ex girlfriend's father was the State Police Driving Instructor, and would bring me to a local Lot that was abandoned to learn. It was on my own, I asked him to teach me. And we worked on it for a few hours every Saturday, for like 5-6 weeks.

Sir Nuke, I understand everyones point about driving fast. And believe me, most of you would fall asleep when I drive. I am the guy who does 35 in a 35 zone. However, This weekend was a controlled environment. Until he went into the the same lane. It was then that my defensive driving training kicked in and took over. It was more of a reaction than a premeditated act; I almost didn't even think about it.

I do not want people thinking I am going out racing on city roads and highways, not even close. I just Like to get on it every once and awhile. This time, It was because of some kid in a Lancer.

I really think that anybody driving a civic that fast is asking for it. I drove my friends Civics for years and had one for about 18 months. They suck ass. The difference between the MP5 and a Civic is huge. I can do things in the MP5 that I would have never been able to do in a civic. The civic is not responsive enough to drive that hard. Thats why all my friends civics have been crashed and rebuilt many times.
