P5 Top Speed?

fastest ive ever gone in my p5 was around 110 on the 15 freeway to vegas...took a while to get to that speed too...

Where is the picture i am interested to see it! I know the thread is old but i want to see some pics of people's top speed!:D

That pictire was before my MP3 ECU when the Protege 5 ECU hit fuel cut off at 132. Now the MP3 ECU slams me into the steering wheel at 135. With my jethot coated header I am pulling hard from 4500 to the rev limiter, but the fuel cut off at 135 sucks.

Ok everyone...I've been trying to figure this out for a while...some people were talking about the TOP speed for the P5. Some were asking if a turbo will increase TOP speed. Those who said yes...well, are wrong. Your TOP speed is determined by your transmission and your final gear ratios. I took the time to dig up some old math computations to figure out the actual top speed of the MP5. This is taking into assumption you're running the stock 195/50/16 tires and the stock GM15-R tranny. Now try to keep up:

Top speed = R / T * C
R = RPM
T = Tranny ratio
C = Circumference of your tire

R = 7200 rpm (rotation per minute)
T = .755 (5th gear) * 4.105 (final gear) = 3.099
C = (((195mm * .50) / 10 / 2.54) + 16in) * pi = 62.293 in = 5.191 ft

You may wonder where these numbers are coming from
195mm is the width of the tire
.50 is the aspect ratio, which is the relationship between the tire's height and it's width
/ 10 is to convert from mm to cm
/ 2.54 is to convert from cm to in
16 is the size of the rim
the total Diameter of the tire is 19.838 in
using the formula C = D pi

R / T = 2330.097 RPM (at the wheels) * 60 min = 139,805 RPH (at the wheels)

Top speed = 139,805 RPH * 5.191 ft = 725,727.755 ft/hr = 137.4 mph

"But there's the picture of the guy going 140 mph. What about that?!"

Here's your answer. THEY CAN BE
INNACURATE.

I'm sorry to say that he probably wasn't doing 140 mph.
I hope this clarifies some misconceptions about top speed.

Feel free to question, double check, etc. Now, you can change your top speed by changing your tires (bigger tires = larger circumference = higher top speed).

I can also validate the claim about innacurate speedo/odo. When I was running stock rims my speedo speed and actual speed were about 5mph off. I was going slower than my speedometer was telling me.<!-- / message --><!-- edit note -->

With my current tires on the wheels, I beleive the limit was 144mph, but I've seen 130ish in my... Interestingly modified N/A Protege5. =) Scary. My car is so biased toward highway driving, getting from 70 to 100+ is REALLY quick, now, but I only do it on desolate roads, and not terribly often, at that.

EDIT: The 144 limit is with a non stock tire size, keep in mind. =) And I've never been that high.

well one time going to six flags in nj i got close to 120 mph with power and speed left to push the car even faster but i got a little scared and my friend was way behind me i slowed down...and with an expeidition i used to have i floored it one day and the speedo reads 100 mph on those and the needle was way passed that so im guessing i got to like 110 in that beast...i miss that car sometimes it was awesome i beat the s*** out of it and always wanted more...haha

its hard to find a straight away were i live because its all twisties here, which i enjoy, so i cant really push my car too much at times...

also my car is stock 5 spd p5

Holy crap... 230kph... That's almost 143mph! Daaamn...
Like I said, The car blew up. I think that the MP5T would have run for many happy years had I not run the redline like that.

No mater how fast the car is 0-60 at 15 or 20 PSI of boost. My car will always stop at 6000 RPM in 5th unless I'm still on a 1/4 Mile run...

I may be able to get that fast by gearing but the Stupid ECU shuts me down harshly when the speedo reads 135, no matter where the RPMs are at. (Usually less than 6K)

I hate that instant shut down (fuel cut off) until I hit 130 then power resumes up to 135 then shuts down again. I've done that for several miles trying to get past it never letting off the gas. I have even gone down a 6% grade and still hit the stupid cut off at 135.

I know that due to tire size my speedo is off (205/45/16) from actual speed but it still shuts down the car with a vengance at 135 on the speedo.

Need to take a GPS with me next time.

Since you know the formula of our gear ratios can you answer me this?

In 5th gear I used to cruise at 4K RPMs at 82MPH then I installed my 4 to 1 jet-hot coated header and drove home at 86 MPH at 4K RPMs.

Same road same elevation, same tires, same tank of gas.

Its got me puzzled cause there was no change in gear ratios. I just picked up an extra 4 MPH by dropping that heavy stock manifold and CAT and replaced it with a coated header. Jet-Hot claims a 1-3% HP gain with their coatings.

Any way it still stumped me how I got 4 more MPH at the same RPMs on the same road and the only thing different was the header.

Makes no sense, The gearing is the same, even if your tire was 12x larger, the shaft would still spin at the same speed and give you a speedo readout that was the same...

Exactly my point. I had a friend in the car with me and we took my header to his house. We were on I-17 and I set the cruise at 4K which put me at 82 MPH.

After we installed the header I head back onto I-17 and set the cruise at 4K and was going 86 MPH.

You got me?????

Anybody remember what the 0-60 speed was for the stock Protege5?

I was playing with my stopwatch on my cell phone last night and would hit the start button when I hit the gas and dropped the clutch. Watch the speedo and hit stop butten at 60 MPH.

I thought my times sucked. I was on a cold highway, outside temps were in the high 30's to low 40's and I had only been on the back road for 18 miles. So basically cold tires too.

But first run was a 9.7 0-60mph then try and try again, but only got into the low 10's. I wonder why our cars are nicknamed slowteges? haha

But you know what? I still like my car and love the way it corners up here in the twisty mountain roads.

But I can't remember what Mazda said our 0-60 times were.

I don't know, but mine before the Blow was 6.2 Sec. Without warming tires.

hahah. slowtege.... thast so cute. i love it.
im not trying to be fast or nething i just want somthing that looks good and is reliable. p5 workx for me. i got the 240 to tear up in

Ok, read through half of this..

I went on a long cruise.. only managed to hit 110 mph going downhill. could not go any faster.. rpms was around 5k-6k.. engine just roaring away.. no dropping off or anything.. just could not go any faster..
wtf is up with that?

slightly modified... no boost.. automatic p5.

Anyone know whats up? Not enough fuel?

ok my best is 205kph past a cop on the side of the high way i dont think he knew what happened, but my fasted was 246kph in a 84 5.0l mustang auto. damn that car was loud at that speedand damn that was fast. (screwy)

my fastes has to be around like 115mph in a 98 ford expedition and then around 115-120 in the p5 it was fun.

lol in the expedition the speedo went to 110...i kept foot on floor the whole time, it went past 110 so im guestimating 115ish
