P5 tail light stylization idea

i like the stock tailights on my silver P5 but i ve got a stylization idea that would require painting a pair of aftermarket tail lights.

using the chrome type tail lights one could carefully open the assembly essentially removing the lens and then spray a coat of red duplicolor anodize type piant over the chrome part of the tail light. i think it would be best to mask of the red circle reflectors, the turn signal bulb area, as well as the reverse light indicator leaving them as chrome. replace the lense and call it done.

i think it might look good and the brake lights may even reflect a greater amount of red light. right now i agree with mazda s choice and believe that the red tail lights make a great contrast to the silver paint and when the car is viewed where the tail lights are visiable it is apparent that they definitely serve well as a focal points within an the overall excellent hatchback design.

i only know of the APC tail lights which are an okay designed in my opinion. to bad there arn t more designs to choose from. the only thing about the stock ones is that the break light area is an eccentric shape instead of a circle. i have a mazdaspeed muffler and it s circular tip offers a nice repetition of the circles used for the turn signal and reverse lights.

what do the P5 drivers think about this idea? better yet as anybody tried this and have pics to share?

i did this!!!!

look at the pics....i had the set of chrome altezzas and didn't like them, so we decided to paint them...take a look, and if you like them, i'd sell them to you...i just prefer the stock over the painted ones on a red p5

they are painted mazda classic red and a body shop painted them so the finish is good. they're put together with clear silicone, so they're ready to be installed

by the way, you can't really tell in the pics, but we did leave a chrome ring around the blinker and reverse light

so u actually did this huh! thx for sharing the pix. it s especially helpful to see a stock one and an aftermarket one on the same car.

i know u spent some time/money doing this but after seeing it done i don t think i like it enough to take them off ur hands. i was actually thinking of the anodized "like" type of paint (duplicolor brand) which is translucent and would let the chrome shine through the look of red chrome.

thx again though for taking the time to post ur work relating to the idea.

i have a problem with actually being able to see the bulbs in there. arn t there some bulbs that are orange when on and then white when not? i ld go for a pair of those to replace the stock turn signal bulbs.

anyway if another company does another tail light design they should take enough time to really consider what an upgrade/alternative tail light should feature. some chrome caps over the bulbs like the ones in our headlights only in our tail lights would be cool!

booom- actually, i had some leftover paint from another job and it didn't cost anything to do them....anyway, it was kind of a spur of the moment thing. i hated the chrome but didn't have enough cash for jdms so i thought i'd try something new....i didn't like black or gunmetal on red p5s, so i tried red and it's just not my thing

at least i still had my stockers to put back on!!!

but i totally agree...there aren't enough options w/the p5...it's either chrome, fake cf, or jdms (and of course stock)

about the pics and them being hard to see, it's just my crappy scanner....i'm in the stone age and don't have a digital camera so i have to do everything the old fashioned way, so it's just not the best quality

Just get some overlays from my cuz(Blue Batmobile).Check out his work for the Protege @ bluebatmobile.com.If you want to change the look of your tails,I recommend the smoke reverse/red out kit.Looks really good,easy to put on and it's cheap too.

He s really got his work cut out - literally hehe that's a nice operation he s got going on there. I do like the looks of his work for the P5 your referring to. Although wouldn t that make the turn signal red then? I like the funtionality of a blinking "orange" turn signal so I won't go for that but it does looks really good indeed. I guess I'm being to picky about this but hmm... well I'm definitely glade I picked out a P5!

If I'm asking for the stars I guess my tailights would be completely red (or some darker value of red aka smoked) I'm imagining a continous tone of opaque red. And by opaque I mean non transparent red. So if I go to signal somehow an orange circle would appear and then blink off leaving red again where it once had been illuminated. Same for the reverse lights too. I'ld like to beleive that this could be acheived but it may just be to sci fi.

you should post a pic of your white P5 rear if you want people to hook up a photoshop preview for you.

and that leads me to another idea for the Blue Batmobile website: when the budget allows he could hire a web designer to create a preview garage like the one on tirerack.com. so everybody can get an idea of what his product would look like on their ride!

you can use that pic if you find someone to photoshop them on your car (or just a pic of a white p5)...i'm no good at photoshop and i don't know anyone that is...sorry (dunno)
