Hey guys having an issue just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I looked around and could not find a specific or even close enough topic to match so here it is. I was driving along and felt a slight miss in the engine.....whatever no biggie I was heading to a doctors appt. Well just short of the hospital out of no where car goes from a happy OBX Humm to Sounding like an 80's model 4 stroke motor cycle low groan. I can feel the car shaking and idling off so I figured I burn a plug or two. Moderate fuelly smell pretty much a given what is goin on here. Well I took it and had the code read off because it caused the CEL to blink repeatedly while driving. Code said CYLINDER 2 MISFIRE, forgot the code though. So I replaced all the plugs and it is still doing it.

Well on the Cylinder 2 coil pack Stem toward the bottom but not at the bottom there was an obvious electrical burn mark on the outside of the stem. Not bad or melted but very much present. I am kind of at a loss here and assuming that the coil pack is bad itself. If that were true though wouldn't it show a code for MISFIRE on 3 as well since the 2 coil powers both two and 3??? Car will run and drive but sucks gas a little more, It idles rough but not so rough it wont run, it is out of balance but not so out of balance that is rattles your teeth. I am assuming that both middle cylinders are dead.
THis is the order and way the plugs looked when I pulled them, clearly two is fouled

THis is the Burn on the plug in the relative spot to the burn on the wire

Below you can see the Burn on the wire, its toward the bottom and whitish

Either way need some Ideas on what you think. I would assume the pack is back BUT the additional plug on that particular pack says otherwise.

If nothing else I will update this for people in the future should this problem arise again.

So I changed the plugs in the hopes that would cure the issue because the Guys a the parts store seemed a tad less than knowledgeable. NO DICE, swapped coil packs around and found that the misfire jumped to cylinder 4....whoo hoo problem located as far as I can tell. Apparently the coil packs can go bad on only one cylinder. I will go grab the other pack here shortly and replace it to see if this in fact changes the running condition and status of the car. STAY TUNED....I guess.

yes our coil packs control 2 cylinders each however you may only get a single cylinder misfire when one fails it is a known issue with this car that the coil packs fail a tad more often then some other models. coil packs are wear items that will eventually wear out in all cars. autozone has them with a lifetime warranty for our car for not very much $. those burn marks suggest to me that it over powered and burned the coil pack.

OK so I did in fact get a new coil pack from Oreilles as it was cheaper by 11 dollars and they have a rewards program as well now (YES rewards are great) I installed and problem is fixed. No more issue for now, going to reconnect the reader and ensure that all codes are cleared and go from there. at very minimum I hope that this can be used for some one in the future that may be looking for an answer. I know it is very simple but it upset me as I was 120 miles away from home and had to limp it home to fix it.

Lesson learned : Keep the 10mm in the car and don't leave the credit card at home. PS don't blow all the cash at the casino cuz your mad. (DUMMY)
