station wagon
n.
An automobile having an extended interior with a third seat or luggage platform and a tailgate

p5 has no third seat or luggage platform or tailgate, the interior being extended is pushing it, its just a car wearing a backpack

not that there was any doubt of its un-station wagon-ness, but my manage at work always eggs me on about my "station wagon" and i tell him itll beat his truck in a race any day

There sure are lots of wagons that don't have third row seats and a cargo platform. I used to have an Accord wagon and it had neither of these. I used to drive the family Buick in HS and it had a third row (can you say party wagon?), but it had no cargo platform. It had a door on the back.

Look under Chassis, Body Type. It says 5 door hatchback.

I come from the old school car enthusiasts and here is my take on this (from my experience with vintage cars):
A wagon is a car that can be based on a sedan, but usually has a longer wheelbase than a sedan. If there is a sedan that it is based off of, the wagon must be longer than the sedan. Else, it is just a hatch because the only thing about the body that has changed is the fact that the maker added a 5th door (hatch).

The Protege wheelbase is 102.8 inches and the Protege5 wheelbase is (yep--u guesed it!) 102.8 inches. Regardless of the body length and front fascia being different, the chassis is still the same. Therefore it is a hatchback because only a 5th door has been added.

And at the same time, Subaru calls their WRX 5th door a wagon. Their WRX sedan and WRX wagon have the same wheelbase size.

Industry standards and termanology change with the changing times. I think it's all about marketing. I remember when kids used to think the Honda hatches were kool when they first came out. The term hatch had a sense of "cool factor" associated with it. Station wagons had been out for decades and were never thought of as cool, just a your plain jane family car.

Now that companies such as Subaru are labeling their 5th door vehicles as wagons, the term wagon has taken on a new kool meaning. So, it's not really a bad thing anymore. or-moreover, a "wagon" is considered to be kool, but then when one is referring to a crappy old ford LTD wagon, they call it a "station wagon".
The terms "wagon" and "station wagon" are slowly gaining separate identities.

My friends still like to call my Pro5 a wagon, so I let em. As long as I know that they mean is that my car is kool. :D

would you call a 4 door vw golf a wagon....uhhh no, so neither is the p5
it is a 4door hatchback ...... dammit!!!!!

Diane, I just noticed the vehicles in your fleet. Is that a 10AE with a rollbar?

I thought it was interesting because I have a 10AE (rollbar, hardtop--#4606) and just bought a silver 03.5 P5. Man, I love this P5. Not fast, just fun (to steal a line from Miata.net).

then what's that "flappy door" at the back of the p5? I thought it was called a tailgate....

Just face it...........IT'S A WAGON!
But a "COOL" one at that.!
Don't be fooled guys(AND GIRLS),call it a wagon, call it a hatch ,it really doesn't matter as long as you like what you bought!
I look at wagons two ways......
1.Very cool platform to build an awesome looking and running car that will turn some heads and pick up the groceries!
2.An old lady or soccer mom ride to haul around the rugrats, pick up the groceries and commute to and from work and the little ones school activities.

WHICH "WAGON" DO YOU HAVE?

I agree that the P5 is more akin to the Golf, Omni and more recently, the Focus. The P5 does have more room in the back that a current gold, tho. You know we could end this right not by looking at the golf vs the jetta wagon. One is a hatch and the other a wagon.

I wouldn't define a wagon as having a longer wheelbase as neither of my wagons (Buick Electra and Accord) had longer wheelbases. They were, however, as long if not longer than their sedan counterparts. The P5 being shorter, makes it a hatch.

As far as the kind of doors that are on the back of a wagon, I've seen all types, from a door to a hatch to a taigate to a wierd thing that used to slide under the floor.

How's this:
Wagon: Based on a sedan and as long or longer than it's sedan counterpart.

Wagon or not, don't bother me too much....

As long as any riced out Hondas (minus S2000) laugh and say anything about our car being a slow Wagon I will make him and his girlfriend eat my Mazda dust passing him on the outside of the turn.... (btw I did just that last night on my friend's Civic and then my other friend's MB C240 hatch.)

Oh, and don't worry about going fast on the straight too, I can turn on my Red lights and siren legally with my rescue squad permit and my cop friends will do the rest... hehe

Hi Pro Fiz, unforunately I don't think so as I'll be out of Jersey in a business trip next weekend...:'(

And besides my damaged Pro5 is still not fixed and it's schedule to go to my body shop on the 19th and at the same time have my DG lip installed...

Nonetheless I'm happy to be invited, maybe next time around I'll be able to come. Thanks again, both you and perfwork invited me several times and I'm really sorry I thought I can come but now I can't....... :'( :'( :'(

ha, thats cool, my p5 is going in the shop on monday to get the front fender fixed, it better be out by saturday or else i'll be in the american muscle :D

Main Entry: station wagon
Function: noun
Date: 1904
: an automobile that has a passenger compartment which extends to the back of the vehicle, that has no trunk, that has one or more rear seats which can be folded down to make space for light cargo, and that has a tailgate or liftgate

This is directly from merriam webster online...intepret it however you like, but it sure sounds like our PR5 are station wagons, even though I hate to admit it...

Main Entry: hatchback
Pronunciation: 'hach-"bak
Function: noun
Date: 1970
: an automobile the back of which consists of a hatch that opens upward; also : the back itself

Now we could call our PR5s hatchbacks too cause it is true...
