P5 Engine Trouble....any ideas?

Here goes in a nutshell... I always noticed a metal chattery sound coming from the engine but have never had performance issues or otherwise (have had the car for a year now)... recently, I noticed that the noise got much worst and the car has started puffing a blueish-white cloud on startup whenever it sits longer than a few hours... as of last week, random rough idle and effective yesterday... CEL.

Someone told me that the 2.0l suffers from uneven engine block wear (like one uneven cylinder? and that would explain it?)

I have changed my spark plugs and ignition coils... probably going to clean the EGR but this all sounds like trouble... thoughts?

Go get the code for the check engine light first. You can get this done at some auto part stores.

Does the chattery sound go away or is it constant? And is the smoke gray or white? What did the spark plugs look like when you removed them?

I will get the code, going to but the code reader...

Chattery sound is only present when I push the car, if not, it is normal (seems to come back more with the a/c - I assume more power is required and that explains it...) The smoke is white with a hint of blue, I think... but definitely white.

Spark plugs looked even and had a coke color so maybe weren't due...

Do you check your oil regularly? Is the "chattery" sound coming from the valvetrain? When you describe it like that, valves were the first thing I thought of, but it's hard to know without more info. You can hear it from inside the car? Maybe it's knocking/pinging?

what ever it is its not good. Seems like oil is passing your piston rings and burning. That's why the smoke. Get the CEL. If you press the gas and then quickly release it does the sound get louder? If so it could be a rid bearing. I had chattering sound before. It would do it under load and get louder then stop when I released the gas. I also had smoke issues after starting the car after several hours.

I change my oil every 3,000miles and check it regularly...obviously now that she smokes, I am burning some but still doesn't need a top off... the sound doesn't change in intensity, it really does sound like the valves are chattery.... you can only hear it when driving next to a wall with the window open, never from inside the car even with the windows open... there has to be something for it to echo off of...

Is this an 03? If so, has it had the VICS screw recall performed? Smoke could be valve stem seals but that wouldn't be the noise. Mileage?

Chattery sound when you get on it sounds like pre-ignition (knocking or pinging). Minor pinging is not an issue and is not related to the smoke.

The VTCS or VICS screws would be much more dramatic.

Check the head/gasket. White smoke may be steam. Especially if the plugs look good.

Rough idle sounds like EGR.

I think you have several (unrelated) things going on...

The VICS screws recall has been performed... what would steam look like as this smoke is thick and smoke like (more like smoke than steam)... I agree about the EGR... and guess what, didn't fix it and my CEL went out! Going into the garage tomorrow... will update the post with the results! Thanks...

I just had it done to no avail (it was due anyway)... I have tried different grades and supreme seems to do the car better but do I really need to fuel a 2.0l Mazda with supreme?

Could also be grime and a valve is sticking or not closing completely. I'd try running some seafoam through the pcv into the intake manifold also might have to change plugs after. Cheap start and then maybe a compression test.

The results are in and the noise is coming from the bottom from the engine and is a result of the crank... requires the motor to be pulled for repair or simply replace with another motor... damn Mazda!

he says we can just rebuild the bottom end... but between rust problems and very abnormal wear I am considering selling and buying a Honda or Toyota product better known for reliability... not sure yet, depends on costs...

-or- use the money for the new car to build the bottom end beefier and go TURBO. It will change the way you feel about the car... Keep up with Hon'uhs and spank 'em in the turns... sweeeet.

Rod Bearings.

My car had a similar problem...except Mazda thought it was something else...they sent me on my merry way and a few hour later a blown motor.
yay.
Mazda coughed up a new block for me though.
