2002 mazda protege 5
Hey this is prob a dumb thread but i was just curious. I drove my friends p5 today same year, color, pakage. Identicle except his is a 5-speed and mines the auto. I have the aem intake and header on my car and his is stock. Ater test driving his car i realized that it is is noticably faster and is so much more fun to drive than my granny auto. I was wondering if anyone has the stats on both and how they compare in areas such as acceleration, gas mileage, ect.

5 Speed > Auto

More drivetrain loss with the auto, so you're putting less power to the ground than the manual version of the car is. Not sure of the exact specs though.

What color is his car? I'm assuming it's black since it was faster...

yea no matter what your slow, but 5-speed wee bit fast and just plain out more fun to drive and better on gas as well!

Another perk is the gear change is quicker. With automatic transmissions it will shift at the same speed everytime. Manual allows you to shift faster than what an auto could do. It also allows you to grind gears easier as well.

I No expert but two things slow down auto tranny are first the torque convertor. You loose a whole bunch power there but that allows you to stay in gear even if the wheel is stopped...
Second, other than auto tranny only got 4 gears its gear ratio is more toward the 'comfort' side than 'sport' side from the manual close ratio. Haven't seen the spec for the P5 but I think that's what car manufacturer do for all model. Different market orientation...
And maybe...when you concentrate on the clutch & shifter, time passes faster...

im not gonna lie, i drive my auto p5 like a madman, and it feels pretty darned fast for me. but i dont let it do its automatic thing that much. when im feeling the sporty groove, ill shift it manually and keep the revs up a little bit.
then i can get it up to like 90km/hour in just second gear on the offramps heh, flick it into 3rd and keep goin.

funfun.

i know ill kill it, but hopefully the bands dont snap before i upgrade them. would give me a good excuse to pull the whole unit and upgrade the TC/VB and bands all at once.
then, who needs a manual tranny. It will hold as much power and never die.

but meh. I want a manual protege at somepoint. i just couldnt see having it atm. rush hour around here kinda sucks and i dont wanna get the whole clutch cramp from stop and start for an hour to get to work/get home.

Manual = Fun

Auto = Comfort + 2002 w/OD Button = Fun in and out of Traffic , while drinking my morning coffee (lol2)

I can still drink nice coffee with stick but I can't eat subway now. :D
Working on shifting keeps me awake in traffic tho, I fell into sleep a few times when driving auto...
Until I can afford a dual clutch, I will stick with manual I think...it's so fun!
The only only thing I don't like is that the power isn't continuous with manual, and my gf always complain when I start shifting fast...

Yah, i guess i can deal with an auto for a few more years. If I feel the erge i can always take my little 5-speed 85 RX7 beater car out every once and a while.

5 speed FTW! My wife has the shitronic and noticed my car is quite a bit faster. I wanna take both cars to Moroso and run em on the 1/4 track. I just gotta get better at launching.
