95 mazda miata
Is there a reason why mods for the miata are so freaking expensive. i was looking at the flyin miata webpage. their turbo goes for around 6k. Which is almost twice as much as what the car costs now. Then i look into the suspension packs. Minimum was around 700 dollars. Then i find a decent LSD at andysautosports, which goes for 900 dollars.

Please someone tell me whats going on or if i'm paying WAY too much for mods.

Flyin Miata produces quality kits. So you are really paying for that. Sure you can piece together your own kit. But the FM kits have been tested and proven by the Miata community. There are alternate turbo kits for the Miata, but they probably don't have the support that FM gives to the community.

Performance isn't cheap. Either you:

a) pay for quality and the workmanship behind it
b) pay for something on the cheap and hope it works
c) build it yourself and hope for the best (through trial and error).

Flyin' Miata provides a top notch product that includes performance AND reliability.

EDIT: I just realized that I basically repeated ChopstickHero's post, meh.

Interesting. I see no 6K turbo kits on Flyin' Miata. In fact, they haven't had any kits for sale for months. They're retooling them.

Back in the day it was ~3500 for the 8 psi kit and ~5000 for the 12 psi. Seemed reasonable for a very quality kit. But since my Miata is worth about 2 grand (unless I can convince some kid it's a dreeeeft car for twice that) I'm going a cheaper route.

Yeah, and intake kits are like $150+ and I made my own for $40(the cost of the K&N cone).

They are expensive because it's a Miata...it's a well known name, a car owned by lots of older guys that shell out money for the mods and other stuff no one needs(chrome interior door handles, for example).

I'd say when you look for engine mods, look at the price for the Miata first, then look for the same parts for the other cars, B6 cars look at the MX-3 and BP cars look at the '90-'94 Protege LX/Escort GT. Sometimes they are cheaper.

It kinda depends on what you plan on what your plans are for your car too. I was able to find AGX Shocks and RSR Exhaust for very good prices. The shocks and springs set me back 500 installed which I thought was a good deal until I saw that the Tein Basics sell for $600 which would have been a better purchase.

What do you plan on doing with your car?
What parts are you looking for?

If you look hard enough, you should be able to find plenty of decent quality parts for great prices. I'm in San Jose too, so if you have any questions just shoot me a PM.

True the Turbo kits are being redesigned. But befor that. The 1995 mazda miata FM II turbo was going for around 5-6k. Maybe i looked at it wrong but it was somewhere around there last i saw.

Thats kool.
Ive been looking at tons of sites like flyin miata, andy's auto sports, and JDM for minor upgrades first.

I'm planning on getting a decent suspension and brake system before i install a turbo. If you know any good products that perform well and doesnt cost a arm and a leg to get please let me know.

Yo, do you go up to Calavara's much?

It's also expensive because it's a niche market compared to a lot of other cars. It costs a lot to tool up to make parts, and there are relatively few Miata owners that actually modify extensively, or even modify at all. It's not like the Miata is a Civic.

IIRC, the guys who manufacture the Cool Breeze Scoop (a relatively simple piece of plastic that does a great job at what it's made for) have something like $40k just in the design, patents, tooling, retooling and manufacture of the scoop. (shocked) Imagine what it takes to produce a turbo kit.

At ~$34 a scoop, they're going to have to sell a *lot* of scoops to recoup their money, and every time they make more scoops it costs more money.

Expensive? It does, as always, depend on what you compare it to. My friends drive Subaru, Porsche and BMW. They cry when I tell them what I pay for my parts. I think that for the performance level, the Miata is quite cheap to play with.

Regarding FM: They are worth the money. I paid $800 for a complete suspension kit. Not a bad price and super quality stuff. The support is always excellent and the parts are all top quality. If I will ever run FI on my car, it will be with a FM kit. (I dont know what the 6K came from though. I second SilverBulletES on that one.)

1. LImted clients (no cheap knock offs like in other markets)
2. Until recently it was mostly mature people that would by the car knowing what they were intended for. (might change now that the market's wants has changed for (OMG BARF) "drifting" and kids are buying up anything RWD) God rest many of a miatas souls

also FM is a middle company you can get the same parts for less elsewhere
