Optima Red Top battery question

do i need to buy something extra to install the optima red top battery? thought i read something like that somewhere..i dont remember.. sry lol

If the Red Top battery has the adapter plate on top it should fit just like stock. I have the Yellow Top and it does not have an adapter plate so I bought an aluminum battery cage on E-Bay for $110.00US. Really looks great.

UPDATE: I found this on E-bay. Search this item number 280032896091 for one mounting option. There's a cheaper one at the bottom of the page! This one holds the bottom lip only.

Heres a full cage style like mine 220030763946. Search "Optima battery tray" to see them all.

wow that's expensive..that's about the same as the cost for the battery..so do i have to buy one?

It was the group 75/35 red top battery with side terminals. Has 720 CCA and is still great. I'll be removing it from the car shortly since the car will not be moving for 6 months.

Has anyone had the Red top 34/78 800CCA?? I just bought one have yet to install but want to make sure it fits

been through 4 of them, None held a charge for me. Finally sold the last one for $20 on craigslist.

They seem to be spotty to me,

Went back to my 4 year old mazda performance battery.

I've worked in a shop for a couple years now, and to tell you the truth, the Optimas do not sell very well. People just do not understand its features. So we have plenty of Red, Yellow, and Blue tops sitting around that are well over 6 months old. Advance is the same way. When you go to buy an Optima, ask the salesperson or look on the manufacture sticker on it to find out how old it is. Also, do not use a trickle charger or a conventional battery charger on an Optima battery. Sure it will work for a little while, but soon enough it will be burnt up. It takes a different pulse charge than other batteries. Alright, and for the alternator. If you have a multimeter, take the leads and put them on the battery terminals and take your hand and hold the throttle to around 1,500-2,000 RPMs for about 15 seconds and check what kind of voltage you get. It should be somewhere around 13.7-14.2 volts. Hope this helps you out.

wow that's weird.

I have an old Ford Bronco II that I use once a month (if that often) for offroading trips. It has both a red top Optima (the primary battery) and a Yellow top (the auxilary) for power. I've never had an issue yet, and at one point, it sat 3 months, and started fine.

I'd check for a draw first, then see if the charging system is up to par.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the red top is the only Optima to be used in a conventional manner as a starting?service battery. The Yellow and Blue Optimas, are designed as Deep Cycle batteries which are designed to be discharged completely and then recharged.

I may not be 100% correct here, but I believe they only make one size Optima in the red, yellow, or blue.

I'd still go with the red though, because the others are deep cycle batteries and aren't as suitable for regular service. Deep cycle is the same type of battery that is used in boats, electric golf cars etc, and is designed to be discharged almost completely then recharged back to full charge repeatedly. An alternator in most vehicles is not designed to do this. I use my Yellow top as an auxiliary battery to power a winch and accessory lighting. Since it sees no starting service and only occasionally do I use the winch, it works fine, using an isolator to charge it from the main alternator.

I would go with an Exide Orbital Battery instead of optima, unless you want the flashy cover. The orbital is a sealed 6 cell batter and same size as the optima red top, barely fits in the stock battery tray though, but does fit. I have a picture and will post when i get back to my room, im in class atm

Please post a picture, as I need to replace my Optima Red-Top with a better battery.

A "better" battery then the Red-Top? I guess that would be the Yellow Top? Because nothing made by Exide is going to be better than a Red Top.

I have to agree...... Of all our local dealers, only one sells Exide, and nine out of ten times we replace an Exide within a year. Even in golf carts......There's a reason why they are cheaper.

My Red top is 2 years old now, sits for 3-4 months at times and still works like a dream.

Dirty terminals owned. AutoZone battery going back. Optima will stay for a little longer. Came to this discovery when disconnecting the negative terminal to take out the Optima. I looked, and the terminal I have for that side is gold, and the hole was a little big. I had to add a little adapter ring inside the hole to make the terminal fit over the battery terminal. The ring, and the gold terminal had corrosion. I cleaned both, and for s**** and giggles, reconnected it, and the car started right up. I will be changing that terminal to another type of metal.

Lately, I've been learning a lot about how the smallest stuff has the biggest impact....

My job and life keeps a brotha too busy sometimes to tend to the car like I should...
