Old Enough to fight a war...

But not old enough to get a rental from the Mazda Dealership!!!

I called a dealership in Hamilton, NJ last week to schedule a service appointment. Told the guy I'm only 20 and am gonna need a car for the day while they do their stuff. He says "Sure, that's not a problem"

I get there this morning, they do the paperwork, and call a guy from enterprise to pick me up. Get to Enterprise and they say I have to be 21. They take me back to the dealership and the guy I talked to last week says "I don't remember you saying anything about being under 21." (of course he would say that). So after an hour total of dealing with this crap I snap and throw a fit on the showroom floor. I grab a woman looking at a car and very calmly say "Go buy a saturn, the service with Mazda sucks!" As I walk out, I can see the Service manager is bright red because the lady who I grabbed was out the door right behind me.

I HATE BEING 20!!!

The same thing happened in Winnipeg...but to an even worse extent...it used to be 18 to rent, then it switched to 21...and now you have to be 25 to rent a car. I think the rental places just found that more accidents occurred and the younger people tended to drive them a lot harder(drive it like you stole it if you will). It sucks, but in a way I can understand the viewpoint of the rental places as well.

I know EXACTLY what you mean...and how you feel....

I am a veteran, and I was in the service BEFORE I tuned 21 like most people are it seems....and while I was stationed in states that the legal drinking age was 21....well the only place you could get a drink was on the base...and that sucked...no partying out in town....

I had come from a state where the legal age was 18 at the time...and here I was 20 and couldn't even get IN a bar..much less buy a drink....it TOTALLY SUCKED....

for here I was in a position where I very likely COULD die for my country....yet couldn't get a drink to save my life.

all it amounts to is the rentals saving money on their insurance....bottom line.

I used to work at an Avis car rental company and not a word of a lie a guy returned a Grand Am with the wheels completely trashed and the rims were bent and goughed so bad the car could not drive over 80 km/h without fear of ending up in the ditch.

Apparently they were practicing power slides

into curbs:confused:

but they paid the 15$ for insurance so they had a great time.

I have no doubt.....and its asses like that which have screwed up things for the rest of us.

Check this out. In CA you need to be 25 to rent a car. I'm only 20 but I can still rent one because I work for the UC Davis. How cool is that?

Mazda says they will provide a loaner car not a rental. But still they make you rent a car. When I last brought the car in I ended up walking to my work after the rental guy insisted I let him charge $100 on my card until I returned the car. I have had to leave my car with them 4 times now and they still can't fix it. At this point I am getting pissed. I bought a car so I could get where I need to be more easily. I love the car but the service does suck. The guys at the dealership are very friendly but that does not fix the car. And being without a car unless I let them tie up $100 of my money is not acceptable.
Thats enough ranting for me today.

try a different mazda dealership. it might be out of the way, but can make a world of difference. NOT all dealerships are created equal.

My dealer has loaners. They don't go to a rental place. The time I had to leave my car they drove a 626 right up next to my P5. Signed once. I was out the door.

I thought the same thing when I served... I wasn't really into drinking, being that my M.O.S. was millitary police, but the whole concept of legality and age just didn't fit in the military. There I was being trained in how to kill people, and a cold glass of beer was off limits?? (nevermind that I joined when I was 17.. lol)

Oh well, when I was stationed at Fort Benning I escorted so many people out of the officer's and NCO club, I didn't want to drink any more. I actually had to file a report once, because a major tried to fight with me while leading him out. Not many E4's have to deal with that kind of junk, but it all turned out ok I guess. Well, that and the fact that Benning is where most of the Army Rangers train didn't help matters any either. :)

Here in Mississippi you have to be 21 to rent a car, I think...
I rented younger because the company I worked for vouched for me, but it does really suck. I would write a letter to mazda complaining, they say they will give you a car as a loaner with nothing said about age... Anyways, good luck.

my friend is currently renting a 2000 dodge stratus 4 cyl...and man is it fun to go aroudn corners pulling the e-brake ;).
We were doing that friday night at the races and s***.....ppl were staring at us like "morons"...like we care.......enterprise can worry about it :P

VERY good examply why NOT to buy a used car from a rental comanay..

:{D

1st time I brought my car in I got a special edition miata, next time i got a 96 base protege, now it go see the rental company. the first few times it sucked becuase I was 20. and since I became 21 I haven't brought it in.

Ain't that a b****?

You are responsible enough to make a 5 year or so commitment to Mazda for $20,000 but not responsible enough to borrow a cheaper, more common car for a few days?

It's call bull s***.

It happened to me when I was 18. I bought a brand new Ford Ranger that literally broke down every week. Something went wrong every week. So when I took it to the dealership and they offered me a rental, the rental place was the one who wouldn't let me get a car because I was 18.

But I don't blame the rental car company, most people trash their cars.
