Ok i found a 93 rx7 with a factory rebuilt motor abot 20k ago. it has the same turbos, but they say that they are in excellent cond, with a solid boost a pattern.. ok so i guess my question is how much do i have to worry about these turbos going bad ,, and if they do how much is that ? thanks for the help i am a newb to turbos ..

How many miles on the car? All turbos eventually wear out. As I recently mentioned in another thread, IMHO, you should consider them a "consumable" just like a clutch or brake pads. And like a clutch or pads, how long a set of turbos last depends alot on how the car was driven and maintained. Right now I've got 76k on my original set, they boost a perfect 10-8-10 pattern and don't smoke at all. They are however, just now starting to leak a bit from underneath the rear/secondary turbo. I could get several more thousand miles on it though. Just depends. I have no direct experience, but my sense is, when they start to smoke, that's an indication that you probably don't have too long.
Been a while since I've looked, but IIRC you can buy a spanking new set for 2.2K to 2.6k and get a quality rebuild for a little less than half that with your core.

Look for the links I posted in this thread, especially the "Buyer's Guide" article. It's got great info for a prospective buyer, including how to check for proper turbo performance. Good luck and if you do buy, be sure to post up pics and details. :)

On a quick search I couldn't find any links to absolute OEM turbos. Two of these are the efini turbos, which were on the later model FDs. I think they're a bit more efficient than the originals. But for my money, if you indeed need a set of twins, I'd seriously consider the BNR state IIIs, although I believe they require some minor modification of the 'Y' pipe.

Thanks for the help... I wqas just wondering , are these rx7's as unreliable as they seem ? ? Thanks ,,tony

ditto. At least I know what to expect from an fd. The RX-8 is baffling with it's multitude of issues, and I dare NOT work on it myself.
