Oil press. gauge help...

I got my Oil pressure gauage and I have no idea how to install the sensor and the installation manual didn't say anything, can anyone help me out?

do you have mech or elec? and what brand?

i got the electrical one and it was kind of a pain in the ass to install.

i can do a quick "HOW-TO" but it probably won't be good nuff, BTW my oil pressure gauge is an electrical gauge made by autometer (2 1/16)

#1 mount gauge somewhere or in a pod
#2 connect gnd to gnd, ign to ign
#3 route the signal wire to somewhere in your engine bay for now (just get it through your firewall)
#4 you will need to jack up your car and put it on jack stands (for the front only)
#5 if you know where your oil filter you should see another plug to the left and a little further up. this is where you need to put the oil press. sender
#6 remove your oil filter
#7 remove your stock oil press switch and nylon tie it to something. such as a near by harness (thats what i did)
#8 wrap some teflon tape around the threads on the sender
#9 screw the sender into the engineblock
#10 connect your signal wire that you routed through the firewall earlier to the sender
#11 start car and make sure you have pressure, should read over 50psi if your car is cold. when your car is warm it should read under 25 @ idle and around 50 @ 3K RPM or over

this is if you want to keep your dummy oil light working (if this light goes on you are already screwed)

you will need a T splitter that will connect to the engine block. one of the ends needs to be male, and 2 ends need to be female.

teflon tape the threads, screw in the T spliiter, and then connect the stock pressure switch to 1 end and the aftermarket sender to the other end.

Thanks, that's exactly what I need to know is where the sender is hooking up to in the engine block, but do I really need to get the oil filter out? BTW I have a electrical one from Defi... I'll post pic tomorrow if I have time. Thanks again!

So basically another oil change while I'm at it... Hehe, not hurt I guess... thanks I'll try to do it later :D

BTW, mod people maybe you woud like to move this thread to the how-to section? This might be of use for others too.

I got an auto meter oil press. gauge and it has a hollow plastic tube Im guessing its mechanical would i go about hooking it up the same way? thanks

is the hollow plastic tube goes all the way to the gauge? I don't think they make mechanical gauges and most of them for sale now a days are electrical. But I could be wrong... Check AutoMeter's web site to confirm and if it's electrical you'll need to remove to idiot light sensor located above your oil filter which you'll need to remove before getting to it...

Re: Oil Pressure

Hello, I just finished installing a Turbo in my P5. Please do yourself a favor and get an electronic sender unit and guage. It will save you so much fuckery. When you are under the car, look at the back side of the engine under the intake manifold. You will see the oil filter and two silver things with wires coming out of them. One is Oil Temp, that has no light or guage. The other is the stock oil pressure sensor. It is only a low/high trigger that is factory preset to come on at low oil pressure. Remove it and get a brass fitting that branches off to a tee. Put the stock sensor on one side and the new one on the other. If you don't keep the stock sensor, the silly red light will come on. For all you forced induction ( Turbo ) prople, this is also where you will find your oil feed for the turbo bearing. Hope To Have Helped. Later

Here is a photo of what I made off the shelf from an auto store. The Oil sender that you want to tap is this one in the photo. It's the stock oil pressure sender. Disregard the line leaving the "T" that goes to the turbo. Later

i just got my defi gauge today (yay). there was an adapter that came with it to put onto the sender (obviously for a different size thread to the engine). mopiko or anyone, did you use this or is the thread on the sender the right size?

edit : i need this asap because i need to drive to the spare parts shop to get an adapter made up so I can keep the stock oil pressure sender.

thanks.

The thread on the sender is the right side, just remember to use "thread glue" on it before installing it in.

Hey Brian...so from reading this it's possible to install both an oil pressure and temperature gauges in a P5? I understand using a t-fitting for the pressure because you don't want the idiot light on, but would I need to use one for the temp gauge -- seeing as it doesn't lead to anything? Or would it be a good idea to use a t-fitting there to...just in case it's used for diagnostics?

Thanks!
