Oil loss prevention

I think most of us will agree that the oil system of our cars just absolutely sucks!! I've been burning through 1-2 quarts of oil between oil changes every 3-4K miles, and I don't have any leaks. Compression is also fine on all cylinders.

What can be done to improve the oil system and prevent oil loss? Where does this oil go?! I know I'm not the only one having these issues, so please share your opinions.

i agree, i change my oil every 3k miles and during my last change i only got 2.2 qts out of the car....where is the rest of the oil...my compression is good no smoking turbo no leaks....so wtf

There are a lot of threads about this lately...now that the FSDE's on this
forum are getting up over 100k I see more and more of this same complaint.
And no definitive answer. Mine is doing the same but everything otherwise seems fine.

i blame my turbo seals.... but i cant confirm

i lose about 2 quarts between every oil change

All that you could do to narrow the search down is a leak down test, I have 100K miles and i dont use any oil and never have. if you do not see any oil on the ground and there is no smoke or smell it must just be magic.

No leaks, no blue smoke, no oil in turbo or intake. However, a quart disappears every 3-4K miles.. I even have the MSP oil cooler installed (I own a P5-T, not that it makes a difference since engines are the same).

While we're on topic though, I read all these stories about people blowing their engines due to oil starvation. Is that mainly due to poor oil pan design or what?

The rods are a more common cause if engine failure The oiling system is not bad. A bigger volume pan, and a higher volume pump does help. Although if you do not mod the MSP and drive it as intended you will not have any problems with the engine. It is when people start pushing the limits when things start to fail.

There have been several documented engine failures due to oil starvation. It seems that the higher percentage of those failed while giving throttle during a turn

I am positive that there are cases that are due to Oil Problems. Although those cars were more than likely far from stock, and had a rough life. I think that the Rods and the weak LSD are the main problems. Cause i know of stock cars blowing that junk LSD out.

What does LSD have to do with blown engines and poor engine lubrication?! Let's try to stay on topic here.

The question still stands, how can the FS-DE lubrication be improved in order to prevent oil loss and possible engine failure?

I haven't had any problems with this, or at least not that I know of, I gotta change my oil still in a week or so, but would an oil catch can or a setup like that help with it at all?.. again I'm just throwing that out there I don't really know

I have never had a problem with the Oiling system and have been hopping FS engines for years first in the MX6, and the oil system was never a issue. Common sense will prevail in this one things IE: Oil just does not just disappear. It is leaking or burning. Then i guess there is a 3rd option someone is breaking in to your car and stealing it. Preform a Leak down test and you my find a issue.

Mine is doing the same thing burning oil at 90k. I'm pretty sure it's related to the turbo though. I'm in the middle of a road trip from portland, oregon to san antonio, texas and when I stay out of boost i don't lose any oil but when I start getting boost happy, especially when the engine has been running all day, I find that I'm burning oil. My compression is good too. Is it time for a new turbo?

Also what is a leak down test?

A leak down test checks the valves, you use a hose with a fitting and a o-ring on the end thread it into the spark plug hole. Fill the cylinder with compressed air from a air compressor, and you listen for the air escaping through one of the manifolds.

check your turbo for shaft play, if the seals are worn oil will leka through it. the oil is at a much higher pressure than the air the turbo is making... i'm pretty sure i'm leaking oil out my turbine seal because i spit oil out the exhaust on cold starts when the oil pressure is up around 60psi, i dont have an oil restrictor :( . it's not getting burnt either. id say pull off your turbo outlet pipe and your downpipe and check for oil

Sorry to tell you but if there is oil coming out of your exhaust then you are burning oil. Your Cat alone burns so hot it will ignite the oil in the pipe.
