Last year at the Tokyo Motor Show, Subaru presented the Exiga Concept, with an almost production ready look to it, therefore it comes as little surprise to see the confirmation of a production with an official teaser image and the launch of a mini site.
Billed as a 7-Seater Panoramic Touring, the new Exiga certainly appears to have kept the concept's overall styling and although we have no confirmation, we would expect to see the concepts 2.0-liter, horizontally-opposed, turbo-charged engine as one of the engine options in the production version.

Subaru Exiga Spied Up Close in California

There is still less than one month to go until the Exiga makes its official debut in Japan on June 17, but spy photographers have caught it nearly uncovered in the thick forests of Northern California. Subaru released a handful of Exiga teasers late last week, but none show the body details as well as these photos captured yesterday. Based on the Tokyo Motor Show Concept, the aggressively styled touring wagon will sport seven seats with a panoramic roof which extends all the way back to the C-pillar. The Exiga measures larger than the current Outback and rather close to that of the Tribeca. We expect to see the 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer engine as one of the engine options. Rumors are already spreading of an STi version but no evidence has surfaced, yet

waiting to see un-camoed final version. Might be just what I'm looking for in a next car (if I buy another wagon)

Yeah, this'd be almost perfect, since I haven't heard any more rumors lately about Honda bringing a Stream or anything similar. Unfortunately, with the mileage most Subies get, you'd be just as well off with a Sienna or Odyssey in that regard. Even base Imprezas barely pull 20 mpg in the city, so if you don't need AWD, you're better off looking elsewhere.

I dunno, I easily and consistently get 27mpg in my wrx on the freeway averaging mid 70s. I doubt that engine would do so well in a car as big as the exiga, but mileage has never been a problem, except in my mazda5, which got 20mpg...on the freeway.

Nice, the Sti would kick some butt...

Interesting. Manual or auto Mazda5? I think the '08+ 5s solved that problem with a 5AT.

Drive 5MT so I get 24-28MPG highway (60-75MPH avg). The 5AT RPMs at that speed are even lower than the 5MT RPMs, so it should give better mileage now...

they haven't said officialy, but if i recall correctly, subaru filed a copyright in the U.S. for the Exiga name.

if the d-pillar finished off more like the p5 i'd be all about this car...but i guess if it did, it wouldn't be able to fit 7. still, its def one of the hottest wagons i've seen lately.

Taking over the reins from the discontinued Traviq, the new Exiga promises to be a much more exciting proposition.

Since sales of the Traviq (rebadged Opel Zafira) ended in Japan in 2004, Subaru customers who wanted a proper 7-seater wagon had to look elsewhere. Now just prior to its release next month, firm details of the new Exiga wagon have come out and it looks to be one of the more desirable family wagons for those after a little performance.

The design has changed very little from its Tokyo Motor Show concept guise, the front and rear bumpers getting subtle changes but otherwise faithful to the 2007 concept. The interior on the other hand has (unsurprisingly) been toned down, the array of monitors that occupied most of the dashboard are now gone and replaced with simple plastic trim. Overall dimensions are 4780mm (length), 1770mm (width) and 1630mm (height), with the wheelbase being 2750mm which puts in right in line with the Honda Odyssey. It has been noted though that the 2+3+2 seating arrangement leaves the third row passengers with only adequate room.

The 2.0L four cylinder boxer turbo engine from the Forester will feature prominently in the Exiga, giving it a performance edge over its more family orientated rivals that will be instantly recognizable with its hood scoop. The EJ20 turbo will match the Forester XT’s output with 230ps and 32.5kg/m. A naturally aspirated version is will also be available producing 145ps and 19.8kg/m, which will be mated to the Foresters 4-speed automatic transmission with the turbo version getting an auto transmission with SI Drive similar to that available in the 2007 Legacy. Power will of course be put to the ground via a symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.
The NA version of the Exiga will sell for 2,400,000 yen while the turbo is expected to sell for 2,800,000 yen.

Seriously? They continue to develop new cars with their 4-speed automatic. Even GM and Chrysler have started to eliminate 4ATs.

Their 4-speed auto is not that great either. I hated it in my 05 LGT. GM, Ford, and Chrysler are going to 6AT in their latest offerings.

Today in Japan the all new Subaru Exiga went on sale. The Exiga, first shown as the EXIGA concept at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, combines seven-seater functionality of an SUV with the sleeker looks of a wagon. Subaru has stayed very close to the well received concept car, including panoramic roof, with only the futuristic chrome details missing on the production car.
The Subaru Exiga is offered in four guises, the entry level 2.0i, the more luxurious 2.0i-L, the sporty 2.0i-S and the grand touring 2.0GT model. The GT model is powered by a turbocharged 2.0 liter DOHC horizontally-opposed boxer engine producing 225 hp while the other models do with the 2.0 liter DOHC boxer engine putting 148 hp to the road.
The naturally aspirated engines are linked to a 4-speed automatic transmission with Sportshift and Active Torque Split AWD, while the GT is hooked up with a 5-speed automatic with Sportshift, Subaru's SI-Drive and the Variable Torque Distribution system.
