OEM Navigation System Questions

:
2021 RDX A-Spec
I passed on getting the Tech Package when I bought my CX-7 because the only feature I wanted was the navigation system, and I wasn't gonna pay $4k for it. However, I kinda wish I had a navigation system, but I have some questions:

1) Can you purchase and install the OEM navigation system yourself?
2) Would I lose anything by getting an off-the-shelf system (Pioneer, whatever) instead?
3) Can the OEM navigation system be "modded" to play DVDs?

Thanks!

the pionners navigations are the best i recomend you to get them it will work fine in the cx-7

I'm putting in a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 NAV/Audio system. This gives you a 30 GB hard drive, 7" screen, DVD capability and MP3, Bluetooth cell phone control, Ipod support and control and rear camera and satellite capability. (cool) What more could you ask for? Available from several online retailers. Just Google up AVIC-Z1, Ace

Sounds pretty sweet - plus it looks like it'll be a nice workaround to the ipod integration problem. I have two questions:

1) Do they make CX-7 kit for the space around the NAV system screen?
2) Will you still be able to use the steering wheel controls?

Please post pics when you're done. :)

My installer is going to custom fab a trim plate because of the wedge shape opening and yes, the steering wheel controls will be fully functional. Ace

Please show us pics when you get it installed and the total costs. This sounds like a great alternative to getting the tech package and just having this done instead.
