Octane booster???

:
2010 Subaru Legacy GT
a scooby told me about Toulene, found at paint supply stores, as an octane booster. i was told by my salesman that i shouldn't use any fuel additives on my msp. and i'm thinking that this paint stuff isn't too good for the car. but he said that some harcore ppl use this stuff and doesn't know of any problems. its not like i plan to use it but i was just wondering cuz it sounded strange to me.

Toluene is the main ingredient in many "octane boosters." I would not advise pouring toluene into a fuel system, however. ;)

Why would you need octane booster? Use pump gas....

I've also been told not to use any sort of fuel additive, or injector cleaners as well...

Why take the chance just use a booster from any auto store? Just don't run it to much and you'll be fine. Only really needed if you start running higher boost, something these turbos won't really do.

9Psi is not high sorry, use to 25-30+ as being high.

i know i prolly won't ever use any octane boosters but i was just curious. if i had to i would prolly just use either a NOS blue bottle or red bottle booster.

Higher octane makes fuel LESS combustible, it provides for a more even burn. At slightly higher levels this will increase fuel economy and power (as you are burning more fuel more evenly, but too high and you're burning less fuel evenly. :) The use is to prevent knock - duh.

Too resistant to the timing maps. With more timing and less fuel from the ECU you would have been much quicker Kevin.

Hey turboge If I up the boost to about 8-9psi will the PCM see the change and increase the short term fuel trim, or will it lean the A/F ratio out of obviousness

For some reason I don't think it'll notice too much difference if you are at WOT. It will sense air coming in quicker at partial throttle conditions and in larger amounts, so it should compensate for that to whatever extent it can.

I will be installing a few gauges to monitor things, and my boost controller is on its way. I found that driving at 1/3 to 1/2 throttle makes the car feel much faster than WOT.

So this wouldn't do me much good then, huh??

Don't put 118 leaded gas in a "Cat" equipped car. You'll kill those things quick.

I believe the max unleaded race gas is about 106. If you want to use C16 or leaded fuels, pull your cats off and get a straight pipe. Also tune it with a standalone to take advantage!

Is $7 a gallon a normal price for 118 octane?? Not like I wold use it, but what type of car/engine would benefit from this high of an octane?? is it for cars running at extremely high revs?? Im not that into motors, so i was just wondering...

118 is race gas, generally used in race motors. Any car running extremely high compression, timing, or boost will benefit from its resistance to detonate.

On a 1.8 Miata that I was tuning we ran 100 octane at 10psi on a T3 and put down 298rwhp. With 91 octane it only wanted to give us 246rwhp.

ok the Toulene mix. Do a search if you like. My sugesstion is NOT to run cats with this (might cause melting). use anywhere from 1/8 to 1/6 toulene to about 15 gallons of gas. This will yeild 107-114 octane. Do a search if you like but you MUST mix it right. Toulene is a slow burning fuel so you will really screw things up using to much or using it to often. The best thing to do is buy a drum of 100 or 106 VP. thats what we did! ;-)
