yes you can use the stock ic with the hard pipes if that is what you want, don't expect huge gains but a smoother ride.Blaznmsp said:if i just install the turbo hoses hard pipes do i have to get a smic or can i keep the stock one. if i can keep the stock intercooler nothing damaging can happen is there?
DAWIV said:Man the stock intercooler sucks, it heatsoaks too easily. After 47k, I finally ordered a CustomMSP SMIC to go along with my Turbohoses pipes.

"It is Soaked With Heat"
Basically, The intercooler is able to cool the air for a short time, then it becomes so overwhelmed with hot air that the air charge is simply able to pass into the rest of your intake system un-cooled.
Could cause serious problems such as Pre-Ignition/Detonation.
Detonation (also called "spark knock") is an erratic form of combustion that can cause head gasket failure as well as other engine damage. Detonation occurs when excessive heat and pressure in the combustion chamber cause the air/fuel mixture to autoignite. This produces multiple flame fronts within the combustion chamber instead of a single flame kernel. When these multiple flames collide, they do so with explosive force that produces a sudden rise in cylinder pressure accompanied by a sharp metallic pinging or knocking noise. The hammer-like shock waves created by detonation subject the head gasket, piston, rings, spark plug and rod bearings to severe overloading.
Mild or occasional detonation can occur in almost any engine and usually causes no harm. But prolonged or heavy detonation can be very damaging. So if you hear knocking or pinging when accelerating or lugging your engine, you probably have a detonation problem.

next, getting hardpipes will not affect your intake temperatures. the intercooler will attempt to cool the intake air. but because of it's small and inefficient design, it doesn't do a very good job. so getting just the hardpipes will just smoothen out the route the air will take from the turbo to intercooler to intake manifold. if you get the turbohoses smic or something similar, then you will notice an increase in power from the extra cooling.

Blaznmsp said:ah thank u i was looking for that. anyway... so no matter what, the stock intercooler sucks and the hard pipes wont do anything to increase heat soak correct. im just getting them so i can get the bov on. i just dont want to mess anything upc
Dr.Sound said:any metal pipe will run at ~30 degrees higher.
plastic pipes were pressure tested up to 21 psi.
the only thing is that the upper pipe expands under boost.
be ready to stall with BOV, and bog after every shift because u'll be running rich as hell.
these cars were not designed to vent to atmosphere.
