NOOB ALERT: What upgrades are available for a mazda3 ?!

Okay, so i am a complete noob when it comes to this Mazda3, eventhough i have been leasing the 08 HB for more than a year now, and i was wondering:
Assuming i will buy it once the lease is over (contemplating getting a mkv GTI, but worried about the maintainance) what are available mods for it ? is there a chip i can install (like GTI's APR) and is the OBDII helpful in unlocking some extra functionality like the VIA-COM does ?
If i were to mod i am thinking of getting coilovers, and better tires and a chip. are there any other recommendations ?

I will post some pics as i get home, but it's as factory as it gets, since it's a lease.

on second thought, i'm reconsidering modding it. i should really just upgrade into a GTI.. the RIGHT choice is MS3, but with my commute a stick will hurt
