Noob...06..5..Cardinal Red Mica..AT

Just wanted to post a quick intro, been lurking on here for a few days waiting to see if she was actually going to get it, just didn't want to Jinx the GF's new car/wagon/minivan (not sure which it is) Well she just called, she Purchased a 2006 Mazda5, Touring Edition, AT, Cardinal Red Mica, 21,000 miles for under $10k. It should be coming home tonight with her. Looking forward to learning a little bit about them on here. It will be her DD, we have no kids, just our Boxer Dog, no major mods are planned, maybe just some tint and Visor Vents.

Well I guess off to the parts store for some Mobil-1 and new filters, need to get off on the right foot.

Sounds like a decent deal used. You don't see too many Cardinal Red 5s, so it will be pretty exclusive. as far as classification, I call it a car, my wife insists its a minivan and insurance says it's a wagon. Either way, it's a nice ride!

I guess so, it was the only Red I noticed listed for the 2006's.

Welcome! Good choice of car and color. Do a quick read through of the DIY on changing your own oil if you don't have experience with the cartridge type oil filter, should save a lot of head scratching.

Yeah man, let me tell you that you got a hell of a deal... that or the 5 resale value is a plumetting nightmare! I'm leaning towards the former, hopefully! (nervous)

I too like the color, I got a Whitewater because I wanted my first white car, but good golly they're all over the place! Cardinal reds are few and far between. Welcome!


(PS - I love to see pics and other 5's with drivers in them. Just by looking at my 5 in the driveway, I guess I don't grasp the concept of the smallish dimensions the car really has, until I see someone else in one. I love the size, shape, everything )

It was a good deal, one of the benifit to her job. Are there just not many 5's out on the roads? I keep looking but haven't noticed any. And someone explain to me the deal on Filters, $12 for Fram, and $5 for a WIX? Confused me. and 5w-20 oil? Still waiting on her to let me take it for a drive.

5W-20 is there primarily because it's a cheap way to attempt better CAFE numbers to show off to the government. I'm personally planning to just use 5W-30 to provide a little better protection, 5W-20 is like water.

And yeah, not much on the road relatively speaking in my area, although I see one every week or two. Few weeks ago I thought I saw a 5 merge on the highway behind me (it was dark) and I got the feeling that he wanted to go faster than me. So he followed me for a mile or two, then came up side-by-side for another couple hundred yards until the red light. I glanced over and sure enough it was another enthusiastic Whitewater Pearl 5 owner givin me a thumbs up. After a quick chat the light turned green and he took off. Pretty cool how a family hauler can have the type of comradely typically reserved for niche or sports cars

Ok that helps explain it. was just wondering on that one, all I could find was Mobil-1 in 5w-20 at the local O'Reilly's. I guess I'll keep an eye out for the 5's, i drive 40 miles each way to work, so anything to help pass the time.

5w-30 will not provide significantly better protection than 5w-20 in your stock application. The oil is primarily a carrier for the "antiwear" additives, which provide the majority of the protection. And you will benefit from lower frictional losses from lower viscosity, marginally increasing your mileage. Also, I don't know if mazda is using variable cam timing in this engine, but in my svt focus, the viscosity of the oil made a difference in engine performance because oil pressure was used to vary the cam timing. So for no real benefit, you may be inadvertently sacrificing some performance....and these cars need all they can get. I know intuitively it seems a thicker oil should provide better protection, but in this case it is not the case. My .02.

Hmmmm, I think the dog is assessing the area so to find the best spot and take a leak. No worries, that usually means they like the car (or just call it free tire shine)

Smokin' deal!!!! Where in Indiana did she get that Mz5? Was is a private sale or a dealer? I'd pull the trigger tomorrow if a deal like that dropped in my lap.
