what time were you trying to start it? how much later? and was it colder the first time then the second time?

I have a 2002 protege 5 hatchback automatic/auto manual(triptronic) and it has been an awesome car running awesome and has been maintained thoroughly I have a book of receipts. Most recently a new head&gasket, header gasket, radiator, waterpump&thermostat transmission safety switch, battery and starter, etc.... And yesterday after it was running off and on all day I came out and the engine will not turn over at all. I do hear clicking coming from around the shifter area (P,D,R,1,2) everything electronically works radio, lights, blinkers high beams etc... Just will not turn over, only get clicking sound from that area. I did try and jump the car although the battery is brand new and same thing happened....nothing. Starter has a little more than 8 volts going to it with the key in the on position. All fuses are perfectly fine including those on the drivers side engine compartment. As you can see I have exhausted all options and I'm at a complete loss here I thought I understood cars pretty good as I was a mechanic 12 years ago but things have changed drastically since then and I am stumped!! It seems like some on this site are very knowledgable in these cars and so I decided to post this here. Any help is appreciated.

I'm thinking you possibly could have a loose ground somewhere as well. Did you replace the starter yourself? Corroded connections can intermittently function and not function as well. Possibly check for loose connections?

The only other thing that I can think of without too much trouble to check would be the contacts/wiring to the ignition switch...If you said there's absolutely no click when you turned the key and you're getting at least 12.5v on the battery without running..

the 'clicking' you hear...is it like the clicking when a starter motor tries to 'load up', and then won't turn? That is a usual sign of a starter simply not getting the cranking amps to fire...and when you're in a weird spot charge wise like that, your other accessories may still have the power to operate...but you said you tried to jump it, and nothing happened? Did you let the battery charge from the jumping for a few minutes before attempting to start?

but if its a different clicking, like inside the car or something...check all the switches related to your auto's selector...there is a safety switch in there that will only let the engine crank in the park position (similar to a manual's switch to only crank with the clutch pedal pressed, which have been known to fail)...it could simply be a bad connection prevent the ecu from thinking the car is in park...

You can start a 2002 auto p5 with it in neutral as well..just to confirm.

Do the headlights come on? Dim?
When you turn the key to start what do the headlights do? Any change?
