NEWBIE HERE! Having no luck finding connecting rod bolts

2007 CX-9 Sport
A few months after my local garage recommended and performed an oil flush for excessive sludge, the oil pump suction clogged, & the engine on my 2007 CX-9 Sport seized. Called my dealer and he said there were no serviceable parts and that I would need to bring it in to the tune of $3,000+. After much research (including this forum) I was able to find connecting rod bearings and main bearings for replacement. However, when I removed the connecting rod caps, the bolts on the 2 caps farthest away from the oil pump stripped. I have ascertained that the bolts are M9 x 1.0 x 40mm flanged shoulder bolts, but they are IMPOSSIBLE to find. Any ideas?

Not sure if you have checked Fastenal but if not give them a call:

I've never ever seen an M9 bolt, and do not see it on their website but calling them would not hurt to find out for sure. If they do not have it you may have to get it from your Mazda dealer. I was in the same boat as you years ago for a special M14 bolt that the great GM had on my Buick Rendezvous and could not find one in North America. My local Fastenal location was able to get me two overnight.

jbnuke,
when you have time, let us know what happened in more details.
I am interested in knowing what happened to your engine. Maybe we can learn some things here.
Good luck.

jbnuke, dealers as of late have stopped rebuilding transmissions and engines, and I say that based on my experiences in my line of work. I guess because labor rates at dealers are through the roof, all dealers do now is replace engines or transmissions. Rebuilding takes special skills. So that is likely why they told you right off the bat that there are no serviceable parts. That carries over to the parts department a lot of times as well, they are mutually exclusive.

Try WorldImpex.com or rockauto.com for those bolts

Im quite sure that Mazda Parts Department can still order parts such as that... You need to find a person who is willing to help you.

They will be totally expensive. Be sure to investigate the proper torque procedure.

They might be torque yield bolts like on the protege which require staged application.

You can NOT use a regular bolt, you can look at ARP on line, they make very special bolts.

The other option is to go to a salvage yard and look on another vehicle.

Welcome to the forum...

Wow! You all rock! I am finding out that it seems the trend is heading toward engine replacement rather than engine component replacement. I haven't called Fastenal, but from their website I have noted they stock absolutely no M9 bolts. I did call my Mazda dealer and was told no go on the bolts, but I have yet to be persistent with that. I am going salvaging this weekend so hopefully I'll find something there. I did find connecting rods at Clegg Engine for about $60 a piece - it appears to have caps and bolts with them. Thanks for the links, Brian. I'll check them out. JK, I appreciate you looking into it for me. If you find any, let me know and I'll send you some contact info. Biggie, rockauto had my bearings, but no bolts...I'll give worldimpex a go. Seriously, Thank you all for the great tips and help! Glad to be aboard.

PS Ceric - will detail soon.

I'd take the bolt to Fastenal and see what they say about it.

^^ I guess you didn't bother to read any of that for real..

an M9 bolt is non existant. Even if fastenall had one, It is going on a Rod, on a balanced crank. It has to be exactly the same or it will kill the motor..

and please please please never let anyone do an engine oil flush. excessive sludge on a 5 year old car? cmon now.
