Hello, everyone I'm new to the rotary engine, and i just bought a RX-8 and I love it so far, the only down side is that its the automatic with the paddleshifters, but is a step up from my MP3 that I had, so I was just wondering if there are any do's or don'ts with the rotary engine, I just dont know much about them, other than their power is in the high rpms, any kinda info would be great. Thanks everyone

Welcome and congrats. Check the oil often and keep some in the trunk. Getting gas? Check your oil.
Out to get the paper? Check your oil.
Having a BBQ? check your oil.
Bored at home? Check your oil.
Having an after sex smoke? Check your oil.

Please read the manual. The engine is oil injected and you will have to add occasionally. There is 1.8 quarts between the High and low marks on the dip stick. It Will burn it according to how hard you drive it. Most average drivers will need a quart between 2-3K miles. I just change it when it gets near the low mark. It is not important to keep it at the top, just don't let it go below the low mark. Do not turn the engine off when its still cold, let it warm up to the mid-range before turning off, it might flood if you don't do it correctly.

i just change the oil on my rx7 at 1000-1500 mile intervals and i don't have to worry about that. it gets a little pricy, but it is worth it.

Thanks so much everyone, unfortunately my car did not come with the owners manual, and is short air ram from protege garage is it ok to put on, and will I see some gains? I know some cars its not worth the money, not sure if mazda stock was at a max, or is it worth the 300 or so to put it on? And I will definitly keep an eye on the oil.

any aftermarket intake is better than stock. the stock air box is restrictive for safety reasons, so even just putting a filter on the end of the MAF is and improvement.

You can down load the manual from the Mazda USA site. Leave the stock AI on, you will lose power if you put that one on from heat soak from engine compartment!

even if it has an heat shield? cause the picture looks like it has like a box to block the heat. Thanks everyone again for all the info. Keep it coming, I want to know as much as I can about this car cause I love it!!!

It will be getting its air from under the hood which is always at least 10-15 deg warmer then where it normally gets it under the bumper.

Thanks, then has anyone got those power [pulleys from protege garage, or other places like that? Do they work like it says 10-15hp gains? Just from changing the pulleys and belt? and other than a CAI is there a short air ram kit that anyone's purchase that will show hp gains, even if it is only 5-10hp?? Thanks again for eveyone's info. Oh yeah and does eveyone run premium gas in there rotary's, or is 89 ok to run cause 4.50 is hard to swallow, but if 89 is no good, and it will ruin my car then I will run 93.

Racing Beat intake is the way to go. The others are too damn loud. Also, if you order anything from Protege Garage, mention my name. ;)

rotaries are relatively low compression... running premium is just wasting your money, and even the piston guys will tell you, if you're buying more octane than your engine needs, you're actually sacrificing horsepower.

now this might sound like a stupid question, any oil dipstick that I've had in my other cars say low, high, etc.. mine just has temperatures on it, and notches on the side, I can't tell if its high or low, I mean its not on the bottom of the stick, but can't really tell. And my oil pressure gauge says its a little above the middle, is it supposed to say that, or is it supposed to be in the middle?? Sorry I'm not that smart with cars and none of my friends no anything about rotary engines. And I'm mechanically stupid. I try to figure stuff out. but I also don't want to break things.

One last question, is everybody running 93 octane gas in their RX-8's? Cause it says premium fuel on my gas cover, just wondering if using 89 is ok or should I be running 93. Or can I even run 87. Not sure.

You might be able to run reg-87. The engine will tell you. If you hear a sound like crunching a soda can, stop immediately(metal on metal sound)go to mid-89. That is the sound of detonation and it is Bad for a rotary engine.
