New ipods and Audio Link

What's the deal with the new ipods not being fully compatible with the Audio Link ipod module? I wanted to get a new nano for my 1st mp3 player and the Audio Link for my MS6, but now I've been reading that the 4th gen's won't charge when connected and you can't control them anymore from the radio! Should I consider getting a 3rd gen even though they have less capacity, less features and are same price if not more than the 4th gen? I was also considering a Zune, but I haven't seen anything to connect it to my factory stereo like the Audio Link for the ipod. Anyone have any sugestions in which direction I should go?

BTW, I mostly only listen to music in my car.
