new in dash for the 3's

Group Buy

Will somebody post on here when the GB starts? I am trying to scrounge the cash together now to be ready to buy. All I want is for my trip computer functions(remaining miles, avg per gallon) to continue to work and to be able to use my steering wheel controls. Of course all those features on there look awesome.

I emailed them about the prospect of starting a GB 2 days ago. So far, I haven't heard anything.

My dilemna lies with the price. At $1k, this thing is definitely at the top of the heap. Obviously it looks the best (totally OEM) and supposedly offers all of the features anyone could want. The downside is... it's not a name brand so the sound quality and overall quality may be suspect. In addition, unlike other more well-known models... nobody has a clue as to how well it performs overall. Hopefully once this video (the one they posted was a joke) comes out, we'll at least have some more insight on this... but it still wouldn't compare to going to a Best Buy and testing it out for yourself.

When you consider the fact that you can get a Pioneer AVIC F900 or F90BT for around $500-$600... I don't know, it seems like the more logical choice. Will it look OEM? of course not. In fact, IMO, it looks like crap in the MS3. But saving $400? Damn... that's money that could be put towards a CBE or something.

So.... all the more reason for a GB!!! What do you guys think? Can we get 10+ orders? If so, what would be a reasonable price to pitch?

As mentioned before, there is likely to be a GB on the other caradvanced unit shortly.

Originally they had looked at this unit as well, but I guess ultimately decided to go the other direction. The main negative comment I found was:

"That one is $900 lowest price. Not sure what quantity we would need to hit.

Bad news is that it is DEFINITELY for manual AC only. Meaning that if you have climate control (GT, all MS3's, etc) you will lose your LCD display above the radio."

So apparently there may be some confusion as to whether the trip computer functions would be retained...this definitely deserves some clarification before proceeding. As far as pricing goes it looks like $900 may be the lowest. It is on sale at caradvanced for $999 right now as well.

To me, the main advantage of this unit is the higher screen resolution. To those where that is not a big deal, I'd suggest looking into the other unit, which has confirmed steering wheel functionality with retained use of the trip computer.

Here is a youtube clip of the other unit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XO6Wvey5iA

Which one is the other unit? Theres sooo many idk which one this is? ^^^?

latest email...

I'm starting to lose interest in this model. Suck not to have Sirius built-in

plus the grammar... lol no offense lady but... damn!!!
Sorry for the delay.
We'll make a video with some navigations maps this weekend.
We include just Route66 for North America but the video will show 2 maps more: Finean and Sygic.
I would like to send to you some link about the maps, check them because we have tested them with our device and works great:
http://sygic.com/carpc/index.html
http://www.finean.com/en/index.asp

Different languages, voices, 3D view, day and night colors, speed, miles, arriving time, etc.
This unit is compatible with tomtom map, igo8, tele atlas also but we havent tested with them yet.

About the installation, is not so hard because is just plug the wires, harness and put the radio back. :D
Check our installation guide to get an idea ;)
http://www.caradvanced.com/news/8/Mazda3-Digital-Touch-Screen-Installation-Guide.html

There is not head unit compatible with sirius because OEM sirius works with the OEM radio.

If you have more questions, please let me know :)

Take care

As far as I know, none of these OEM looking units offers satellite radio. You'd have to go with something like the AVIC D3 to have that option.

PS - That grammar isn't that bad, just some funny syntax and plural issues. I'm not gonna bash since I don't speak a second language, and if I did, I'd probably be a whole lot worse.

I was just jokin around anyway... As long as I get the point, I could care less. But how do you know it's her second language?

Yeah, it was just an assumption because most of these units and companies are coming out of China, and it read like some typical Chinese-English grammar.

Not to confuse things too much, but does anyone know much about these units: http://cgi.ebay.com/Car-DVD-Player-with-GPS-Bluetooth-Ipod-for-Mazda-3_W0QQitemZ270357838098QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Audio_TV_Electronics_In_Car_Entertainment_GPS_In_Car_Audio_Players_PP?hash=item270357838098&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177

It looks very similar to the unit at Sundaybuy, but slightly updated. But with that said, it seems like sundaybuy updated their site, and it now says that it is a 7" screen. Pretty sure it was listed as a 6.2" screen before. The picture hasn't been updated though. Here is what it looks like.

You can see that there are some minor design differences, and it does look like the screen is larger (look at the size versus the CD loader).

I have no idea whether these would retain the trip computer functionality, and would be compatible with Bose. I've e-mailed sundaybuy to ask about that. On the ebay listing, they mention that there is steering wheel control, and they say that there is dual-zone function (music and GPS at the same time!)

So I contacted sundaybuy;

- It is the same as that eBay product; they have recently upgraded to a 7" screen.

- The listed price of $350 doesn't include the GPS. It is an extra $150 to have GPS added, as a built-in option. Shipping is $70 for anywhere in the US.

- The steering wheel controls will continue to work.

- The trip computer will not work.

Got an e-mail from Denise at Caradvanced tonight. They just posted their NAV videos about an hour ago:

Here is the video map, we include it:
(meaning this is the default GPS in the system)
ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3PNBj1Ih-8

This is another option that you can use.
(Meaning that this system is also tested to work in the unit)

I also sent a message to the account of the person who posted the videos. According to the GPS screen in the 2nd video, he is in Pasco County, which is one county away from me. I asked him if using a different GPS is as simple as inserting an SD card with the software & maps, or if there is an installation process for the software, etc. Frankly, I don't like the cartoony look of their GPS options, and I wanna keep using iGuidance.

Any info he sends to me, I will post here.

Glad they finally posted some actual video of the GPS... but would have preferred they spend at least some time on showing you how the actual software works. Instead, all they seemed to show you was the little triangle as it progressed down the road.

I would have liked to see how you find destinations... Is it intuitive? (meaning you don't have to spell the entire city/place) Does it store recently found places? Can you set 'favorites'? HOw does the voice sound (we got a small sampling of it on the second video but I would've liked to hear more.) What about load times? The biggest gripe the new Pioneer models had (and still do to an extent) was how long they took to load. The list goes on...

Since this is such an obscure model, we can't rely on research sites (or other owners) to give us insight... unfortuneatly, we're relying on the mfg/distributor (whatever they happen to be.) While I applaud how quickly they seemingly responded to our request to get a video up... I'm perturbed as to why very few of the things I had requested were showcased. This tells me there's a communication/understanding breakdown or... worse, they know the software sucks and want to avoid showing it at all costs. (this was my initial impression when the GPS option was glossed over.)

As much as I LOVE the way this thing looks in the car... If I'm going to live without Sirius, I need to be sure I won't be dissapointed in other areas.

Chico, I had all the same thoughts as you, except for the Sirius deal. No SatRad for me.

But... the guy who posted the videos did respond to my e-mail on Youtube. And he actually lives in Tampa. He said any Win CE 5 Nav software should work, as long as it can be loaded from an SD card. Actually, he sad MICRO SD, and I have my doubts about that. Micro SD is too fragile for this application. I think he means plain old SD.

Anyhow, he offered to test iGuidance for me if I mailed him the software on a micro SD card. I know SD cards aren't that pricey, but I think I'll counterpropose that I meet him & watch while he loads the software & tests it.

While I'm at it, I'll also ask that he take some video of the operations of the unit- initial load time for the entire unit & time until GPS signal lock will affect everyone who uses it. And for those who would want to stick with the preinstalled GPS, I'll ask for a more comprehensive demo video. Very possible that "Denise" isn't able to pass along our requests clearly to him, due to the language barrier.

Tony, the video guy, agreed to arrange a meeting with me to test my software & demonstrate the unit. I have a decent digital camcorder, so if you guys want to list specific items you want to see demonstrated, please chime in. I'll start the list with:

1- system boot-up from the time the key is turned to "on."
2- entering an address on the defaut NAV software
3- choosing a POI on the default NAV software
4- saving an address or POI as a "favorite" in default NAV
5- saving "current location" as favorite
6- can location names be edited (i.e. can you call 502 Elm Street "Dave's House?")
7- clearer audio recording of defauly NAV voice prompts
8- speed to recalculate route if a turn is missed
9- routing options- shortest distance, shortest time, use/avoid roads by category (interstate, major, minor, etc.)
10- rerouting options, and ease of requesting them (i.e. stuck in traffic, construction, need to manually request a new route)
11- does it record routes as you drive?
12- can you pre-plan a route on Mapquest, Googlemaps, etc. & load it into the NAV? (I use pre-planned routes all the time with the MINI club, when we plan scenic trips to twisty roads, etc.)

List your requests, and I'll get as many as I can on video for you.

OK, I got a PM asking about satellite radio options, but that's it so far. Tony has e-mailed me to set up a time to meet. Might be thie weekend, maybe next. I'll report back, hopefully with new video of the details above.

I met with Tony this past Saturday afternoon. Seems like a very nice fellow. He isn't actually in the car electronics business- he just assists his sister-in-law on occasion, because her English is a bit weak. One of the questions I remember people asking was about the possibility of a group buy. She said that if we get 10 people, she will drop the price to $900 each.

I must apologize for now, because my camcorder did not charge properly on Saturday & was dead when it was time to meet Tony. So I have no video- just a firsthand account of the unit's functionality. And because I left the camcorder home, I left my list of questions home in the camcorder bag, so I tried my best to remember everything. Tony said it would be fine to meet again this weekend to shoot video.

Here is what I observed.

First, there is no integrated satellite radio option for the unit. It does have a USB port and a standard aux input, thru which one could connect a satellite receiver. However, you would not be able to use the touch screen on the unit to control anything.

Boot up time was pretty quick. 10 seconds, tops.

Tony told me that he wasn't sure which Nav software was being included by default. He had Sygic, Finnian, and Route 66 all installed. We played with Sygic & Finnian a bit. I forget which was the one we drove around to test, but I think it was Finnian. (Will confirm this when I go for video)

Typing an address into the one we used was very easy. In fact, it used predictive logic to grey out alpha keys which were invalid. Meaning that, after you chose a city, if you started to type the street name with the letter "M," it knew the list of street names, and would only leave the valid options for the next letter active- it would grey out letters like Q, Z, B, G that couldn't possibly follow "M," as well as letters that could, but don't apply to street names in the area.

It was also easy to save addresses as favorites.

POI's were good. They even listed local independent grocery stores next to the big chains, etc. Included addresses & phone info.

Route recalculation was quick- 2 to 3 seconds.

Satellite lock was very quick. By the time the unit booted & we chose "NAV" from the main menu, it was ready to go. No delays or waiting.

This unit also not only leaves the LCD display in tact, it still controls the clock, so you can change/set the clock as needed. And the CD/DVD track info displays on the stock LCD.

There is a function in the unit to link it to your TPMS sensors, and it will tell you which wheel's sensor is tripped if/when you get a flat, as opposed to the idiot light in the dash. (Tony had not linked his TPMS- don't think he was aware of what TPMS was)

There was another function labelled "Brake test." Tony had no clue what it was for, and I cannot imagine what it could be.

The touchscreen seemed to be more responsive in GPS mode than when the main menus were displayed. Not sure why that would be. Not that it was difficult to manipulate, but there were some instances when a "double tap" was called for & took 2-3 tries, or when the response of the unit lagged a half second behind the tap. Overall, I don't think most touchscreens of this size would be likely to perform a whole lot better.

The DVD displays very crisp & clear on the screen as well. Also, the unit does not have a parking brake sensor, so there's no modification needed in order to play DVD's while you drive. Of course, that's illegal in most places, but the choice is yours.

The unit does run Windows CE 5.x, so you can presumably use about any GPS software that is compatible with that OS. (Windows Mobile & the Pocket PC system are variants of Windows CE, and in theory, software for those should work here as well)

I was unable to get my iGuidance software to install an executable file to my Micro SD card. The unit does not take install files from your Micro SD and install them to its internal memory- it looks for an executable file on the SD card & runs it directly from there. I'm working on that during the week.

Physically, it fits very cleanly, and looks every bit as good as you would hope from the web site pics.

Now, the big question- is it worth $1,200 ($999 on sale, $900 for group buy)? Not sure. It is certainly a simpler solution than buying something from Kenwood, Pioneer, etc. with a dash kit. And the flexibility to use 3rd party NAV software is a big bonus for some, like me. I also need to see what the added features are all about- how to configure the TPMS, what the Brake Test is about, etc. Those are very unique features, and could certainly add value over some of the big guys' units.

For my return visit, I will try to cover the other GPS questions listed a few posts back. I also want to ask:

Does it come with an English language instruction/user manual?

Who handles warranty claims and what is the process?

Did the steering wheel controls "just work"? And does it have an iPod interface that controls the iPod from the touchscreen? Thanks.

Edit: Oh and does it have bluetooth for phones?

If you already covered this, sorry! Thanks!

Wow... great job Bill!

Sadly, the lack of Sat radio is probably a deal breaker for me since that's pretty much all I listen to. Sure, I could always add a seperate unit but... I'd then be lessening the benefit of having this unit. (the benefit being that it's cleanly integreates with the interior.) Because of this, I feel I'd probably be better off going with a Pioneer AVIC. It's a shame they dropped the ball here... Everything else looks/sounds good.

Almost forgot.... if I were to get this, since it doesnt' have Sirius, I'd be heavily relying on my ipod. How was the integration?
