New car odometer

Mazda 3 s sedan winning blue
Is 40 miles on a new car too much for a dealership to sell as a new car w/out discount? My s sedan had 40 miles on it. I thought that sounded a bit high for a new car, but it must have been test driven a few times (when I test drove it-I took it for about 6 miles). it didn't really seem like that big of a deal because I didn't have to wait for one from Japan and its just less miles to "break in the car" What do you guys think?

Remember even a car that is brand new to the dealership has still been driven at the factory (sometimes from the factory) to be loaded on to truck or train. With imports they are commonly driven several miles from the ship yard to the trucks or trains that will take them to yet another distribution point to be loaded on to more trucks to go to the dealerships. On top of that they are test driven at the dealer and in many cases driven by the salesmen or dealer's family.

I was once going to buy a car and when I went to test drive it they said I couldn't because the dealer's daughter had taken it to a party the night before and someone had broken out the window. Needless to say I didn't buy that car.

A lot of people will say that's ****** up, but remember the dealer owns those cars until they sell them. There is no law that says a car awaiting sale can not be driven as a personal vehicle.

Mine had just over 260 if I recall. A bit high I'll agree but I've had no problems with it thusfar.

I don't think that you would be able to find a dealer in the country that would give you some sort of discount just on the fact that the car has a couple miles on it. Mine had a little over a 100 because it had to be driven to my dealer from another. My MSP had almost 300 because they had to drive from another state to give it to me. Just my opinion. You have to take the obvious into consideration.

40 miles is fine IMO. Some people make a huge deal out of it though.
The only issue I would have with it is how those 40 miles were driven. I know that when I go test drive a car I get on the gas a little. Some people beat the absolute s*** out of cars when they test drive them. I would want to know at the very least if a salesman was along with the test drives. Even then who knows if you will get an honest answer from a salesman who wants to sell the vehicle. Mine came with 4 miles on it and that was from them testing it at the factory and then the mechanics road testing it before pickup. Just my two cents. And for the guy that had 200 or so miles on your vehicle, that is absurd. That should be actually considered a used vehicle or at a minimum a demo, big discount there. A dealer should never drive the vehicle to another state. For one, it is inconvenient cause someone else has to follow him in another vehicle to bring his ass back. They are usually shipped, odviously from Japan, then sent on rail like mine, then delivered by truck the remainder of the way. Later

Just convince yourself that engine break-in is still not an exact science, and that there's solid evidence on all sides of the argument on how to break in an engine...and somehow, the 40/whatever miles put on the car prior to your ownership happened to be driven in the most optimal manner for engine break-in possible.

You'll sleep easier at night :D

i live right by all the car dealerships in glendale and i see dealership employees driving the s*** out of the cars. whether they're filling it up with gas, or just taking a joy ride, they drive them hard around here. i think it's safe to assume that this goes on everywhere, but seeing it first hand makes me not want to buy a car in this neighborhood...out of sight, out of mind.

I bought mine new with 325 miles on it.. But it was driven from a dealer out of state to my dealer.. I got a good deal and the car I wanted, so I didn't B*tch too much..

It had 77 miles on it when we got it. Wonder how hard it got raced around on test drives. I guess it's only fair considering how many cars I test drove when deciding what to get.

I hear ya - I gave the car that I demo'd an ol' fashioned beating. I didn't set out with that intention, but it turned into that when I wanted to see the car pushed to its limits. The saleslady wasn't all that thrilled about it, but my wife was riding shotgun and ran interference for me while I "tested" the little thing out... Gawd, I love that woman.

I was fully willing to get a car with more mileage on it (presuming that it had been driven in the same manner), but because they didn't have the colour I wanted on the lot, it took two weeks and I ended up with a car driven just 3 km's. Johnnylaw, I don't think 40 miles is anything to worry over.

P.S. If you're the owner of a titanium grey sedan GT w/GFX in Victoria, it's probably someone else's car, not yours... (eek2)

Had 120 on mine when I bought it. I am not concerned and have not had any problems. I tend to believe the break in is a little exagerated with all of the "omg if you redline it the car will be a POS forever!". I drove from 120-1000 before I drove it hard but I did get close to redline a time or 2. Funny how people buy 1 year used cars with 15K+ and never give a second thought to how the car was driven from 0-1000 miles.. Us new car buyers are all obsesive about it.

My 3 was on the showroon floor and only had 1 mile on the odometer.

Back in '97 I bought a demo Ranger with 0ver 4,000 miles on it. Since it was never titled I got a new car warranty which started the day I bought it. I did get a huge discount on it though.

My P5 came with 2.

My Mazda 3 came with 10 kilometers at the day of delivery. And I was the first and only one to test drive the car. Broke it in like I should.

the 1st 20 miles are detrimental...thats when you are running it semi hard to make shure the rings seat properly or the car may burn more than normal gas. had the link on it but can't find it on the other forum(eekdance) My car had 195 on the clock...(notcool)
