Wonder if they'll eventually offer the parts for the 2018 CX-5 at no charge as they have done so for the Mazda 6?

Thought I read somewhere that the rest of the 2018 touring and up lineup would follow the upgrade after the 6. And it sounded like a no charge deal same as the 6.

I don't remember seeing that.

But happy to be corrected :)

Even though Im probably never going to use the touchscreen, Im going to make use of the fact Ill have the CMU accessible when I install the new cables and use the serial hack to enable AIO. The touchscreen tweak is less exciting to me than the hacks to hide input options and eliminate the boot animation and warning screens are.

Got my '18 GT last month - dealer advised that CarPlay would be a free download.

OMG. Hate the knob? Said no one. Ever. The knob is awesome. I'll kill anyone that says different: because that's no one.
I have touchscreen enabled while moving. I never use it. But it IS nice when my passenger can use it. Stop. *******. Nannying me Mazda!

I dont live the knob I think its just ok. The way VW has theirs setup switching between inputs and radio stations is just easier and less distracting. If Mazda had more physical shortcuts it would help. But navigating a menu just to switch to media is worse than on the VW where media and radio ect are always there in the same place and I dont really have to look.

One thing Mazda did to make the hardware difference obvious is to put a phone icon next to the top USB port. If your car has this, then it would be ready, BUT the instructions for installing CP/AA say that software has to be updated first - so you would have to have software version 70.x before the hardware is installed. If you had software and hardware, you would already have AA/CP

Unfortunately, that means that you can't just have a software upgrade because you don't have the new hardware. The software will not enable CP/AA if the hardware is not present.

The dealer was only partially correct. Yes the software is likely just a free download, but there needs be hardware installed too.

I should add its not quite so much the knob as even with out it and using touch there is more navigation involved. A solution is source and preset shortcuts imo

Hope any one can record a video show how they actually did it in the car for all the cables.

All the PDF files are very clear - see the mazda3revolution page. The cable routing PDF lists all the other trim/disassembly PDFs and shows how to route the cable and where to tie wrap it.

If you want a video, it would require 2 people - one person would have to shoot the video and move around the camera. Not something easily done by one person.

If the PDFs are not enough, I suggest to get assistance or let the dealer do it.

I believe they will extend the free install to the entire Mazda lineup Touring and up 2018's and they will charge the older models (CX-5,CX3, 3,6,etc) that are 2017 or older for the parts and the install if they opt for it.

Hoping if they do that they would also include 2017s, at least for the CX-5, as there is no difference between the 2017 and 2018.

Someone is editing their video to put on Reddit now, so he says.
There is no chance 18 CX-5 get it free.

Yeah I highly doubt it, just thinking it'd be super unfair to make it free for 2018 and not 2017 when it's the same. But I'll be interested to see the video, that may determine if I DIY it or wait till I can bring it in to the dealer. I like to tinker but also worried I may irreversibly mess something up.
