new 6 owner looking for advice on performance upgrades

I just purchased a 2006 with the 2.3L and I was looking for some advice on performance upgrades, preferably things I could do myself. This is my first foreign car and I absolutely love it. I wish I would of invested in one sooner.

Thanks in advance

a good start would be an intake. you get these in cold air intakes, CAI, or short ram intakes, SRI, for your car. i recommend CAI. the intake itself isn't a huge deal but you do need a good, properly oiled filter.
next step would be a short throw shifter if you have a manual trans. if not a shift kit is a little harder to install on an auto.
last simple step would be an exhaust. you can start with an exhaust tip but eventually, if you go into bigger work on your car, you will need to go high flow with the cat. and upgrade the down-pipe. the tip may require a little welding and i dont know if your set-up to do that but muffler shops are usually fairly cheap.

finally i just want to say congrats. on buying a mazda. i promise you will just love it more and more the longer you have it. zoom-zoom
PEACE

I beg to differ. It has been consistently shown in the 6 community that catback modifications on naturally aspirated 6's yield little or no whp gains mostly due to the fact that there are very few flow restrictions from the cat on back. The illustration below is a pic of a Magnaflow cat back. The stock catback is just as free flowing and looks exactly like it save for the mufflers. You'd be hard-pressed to find a straighter exhaust than the stockies.

Most of the restrictions are up from the cat. Exhaust mods on the 6 are generally regarded more as an acoustic modification, not a power modification.

Wow, you couldn't be more wrong.

Swapping the exhaust is one of the single best increase in HP.

Magnaflow exhaust setup is junk.

To understand that, just take a look at some of the real aftermarket exhaust, and a few of the custom ones owners have done.

Raynman is correct, whether it is Magnaflow, RB, Injen or any other catback exhaust system, the HP gains are negligible at best.

On the MS6, I'd say substantial gains from exhaust work is possible.

Sadly, that is not the case for us who have been driving naturally aspirated 6's for a good three years now. It has been consistently dyno proven in the other forums that cat back exhausts on the 6 yield no HP gains outside of dyno variance. As I said, it's really no big surprise given the fact that to Mazda's credit they designed a free flowing exhaust from the cat back. Hence, all aftermarket exhausts for the 6 follow the same bends.

Here's a compilation of dynos gathered over the years.

If one really wants to free up some horses, take a look into freeing up the restrictions from the cat on up for naturally aspirated 6's. Here's the stock headers on the AJ engine:

Yes folks, it is chockful of 90 deg bends, precats, and restrictions. Note the 180 deg bend on the piping from the rear manifold! The L3 manifold isn't as bad, but you get the idea.
