The guy at the exhaust shop said from the underside alone he would have guessed I paid $18k+. He said anyone can paint a car, but underneath is where the real workmanship shows up....and he sees a lot of nice looking cars roll onto the lift...but not many that look as nice once the lift is raised.

hehe.. you said torque about a rotary engine (lol2)
Torque wasn't really an issue with the 4-port 13B back in the day. Most of its 4-cylinder competitors had 15-20 less ft-lbs of torque.

1974 Mazda 13B: 117ft-lb@3500
1974 Nissan L18: 100ft-lb@3600
1974 Toyota 18R: 107ft-lb@3600
1974 Ford 1.8L: 97ft-lb@3500

The 4-cylinder mini-truck engines wouldn't reach Mazda's torque and HP numbers for another 5-7 years. However, they did much better when it came to fuel efficiency so in 1978 Mazda settled with only 109ft-lbs from Ford's 2.0L boinger. Of course, if you're comparing numbers to a V8, well then the 13B numbers are laughable.

So it actually was rather competitive in the small truck market.. huh.. ya learn stuff :)

REPU exhaust is now complete. Lou's Custom exhaust added a case-style muffler to the back for $190/installed. It's much more "streetable" now. No more drone but also quieter across the board. It's hard to say how much power was lost but I can at least use the low end torque without bursting my ear drums.

That looks beautiful under there. Nice and clean. Good work.

Thats where Im beginning. I have a 14 piece turbo back "straight pipe" hahahah GGGGGARBAGE. Im thinking 2.5" double resonated no muffler SRT4 style from LOUS CUSTOM... I SWEAR!!! They are the ONLY exhaust shop in the world hahahah

The only problem is that most people that wanted performance weren't going to buy a truck, and by 1978 the 13B just wasn't doing well with the EPA's tests.

I found this today: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/epadata/78guide.txt

A
few stats:

1978 EPA Combined MPG ratings
Mazda RX-4 13B (127hp): 22 mpg (for comparison)
Mazda B1800 1.8L (110hp): 33 mpg
Datsun 620 (119hp): 27 mpg
Toyota Hilix (134hp): 26 mpg
Ford Courier 1.8L (110hp): 33 mpg (same as B1800)
Ford Courier 2.3L (140hp): 29 mpg

So looking at those numbers, it is pretty obvious why they killed the REPU. The lighter and more aerodynamic RX-4 could only manage 22 mixed (27 hwy) while Ford's 1.8L could pull off 33 mixed (37 hwy). Plus, if you wanted more power, you could step up to a 2.3L and have more power and still better fuel mileage compared to the rotary. What was originally a pretty good engine in 1974 simply didn't keep pace with the technology. ...but those boingers just aren't the same when you put the pedal to the metal!

I don't know why but today I woke up determined to take over the world!! HAHAH Or just get on studying for my ASE CERTIFICATION lol

No but seriously, I've been looking for a 2nd job JUST FOR THE MSP. Patience is fine and dandy but why not earn TWICE AS FAST! HAHAHA

Morning all. Been busy the past 2 weeks. Moved out of the apt, moved my daughter out of hers, picked up the RV and hauled the 3 of us to Nova Scotia where my daughter will live. The RV has been a blast, back from NS and we have moved into the RV park.

Here's a pic of my daughter threatening to jump after being with us for 2 days. I finally talked her down after waiting an hour with beer and oreo's.
