Needing Opinions on Painting Brake Calibers

How are those new rotors treat'N yah?

On second thought... I should have painted the "rotor hats." After the new rotors first rain they started turning a little rusty. Kinda looks like ass now. Mental note to all who want to swap their rotors--buy zinc-coated ones or ones that are already painted!

Gonna have to buy a wire-brush attachment for my cordless drill and get the rust off. Will then use some of my left over caliper paint and paint them black when I have some time off near the end of this month. Will also add the "MAZDA" logo caliper stickers I just received yesterday. I think it'll turn out alright... Startin' to lean back toward the white logo instead of the black one. Will post pics when done.

22 post before anyone noticed......... lol I used the same duplicolor pain on my SVO brakes. Lokos good, but it seems to chip easy.

i have a buddy that got a 14" wilwood brake setup for his SVO. he had a shop weld in the wilwood engravings strip the color off and the engraved SVO in the cailpers. He then had them powdercoat it red with white lettering and then cleared .

man talk about awesome looking, though a little pricey.

Where did you get the X drilled rotors?

I used the G2 paint from TireRack. I used this same stuff on my previous car with no issues after 4 years. Also it is fully guaranteed for the life of the car against chips and peeling.

Save your money and your time and use 150 grit sandpaper. It goes faster and does a better job.
Mine are done using the Dupli-Color kit too, and I did have to redo them several times.
I also used some lacquer thinner to slow paint drying time and got a nice, smooth finish that way. Expect to have to redo them before too long, but the more you put on (I'm @ about 6 coats now) the less they are prone to chip.
My advise: Wait to put on the decals until you've got several good solid coats on there or you'll be trying to paint around them.

Nice job!! They look good.

Here are mine. It's hard to see here, but I did my rotor hats a while ago too. Even thought of doing the rotor edges, but then that to be a prime place for chipping.

Super-nice job on your calipers/rotors! They look sweet!! I'm impressed! I have those exact decals, except mine are white (also have a set of black). Gives me a great idea of what they'll look like! Thanks for posting your pics!

I put down at least three solid coats of red on the calipers so far (all original coats--haven't had to recoat) and have driven it over 100 miles every weekday for over a month now and have had only one "chip." And that was on the edge of the left rear caliper--real minor, though. The rest of them look solid.

Probably the smartest thing I did with this caliper-thing is to have replaced the stock brake pads with ceramic pads. HIGHLY recommended!! They really have noticably better stopping power AND I've NEVER had to dust or clean my rims from brake dust since I've installed them. With the stock pads, I was dusting/cleaning the rims every other day! And the calipers stay clean and shiny too!

I'm gonna try to paint the edge of the rotors too, along with the hats and every single beveled cross-drilled hole. Yeah, the edge of the rotor will probably chip. But I don't think it'll look any worse than what it does now (orangish-Ugh!). Who knows, maybe it'll hold up! Gonna try to do it this weekend. Will post pics when done.

Thanks, and you're welcome! (lol)
I believe that (lacquer) thinning the paint helped a lot. I cut it about 25%+/- which gives you much more time for it to flow out and work with before it flashes over. It also seemed to help w/the chipping issue too, since the first coats were done @ full factory strength and chipped quickly. I figure it's because it dried so quickly and was sitting on top of the metal instead of being allowed to flow into it and attach itself correctly.
That first time w/full strength paint was really frustrating for me. The brush marks were horrendous.
I saw that you had ordered your decals from Xenonmod and thought you might like to see what they look like on... or at least one way to install them. These are the aluminum/silver ones of course.

I'd still wait a bit.
I had the decals in my glove box for months before installing them just to make sure the touch-ups were gonna hold. Fortunately, and after several additional coats/touch ups, they are now. I'd wait for the paint to really get hard from some heat and use.
I didn't install the decals for about 6-8 months after the original painting, though I was tempted, believe me.

No squeaks/squeals? I've always heard that is a problem w/ceramics... and one young autoXer guy in our chapter has them and they are noisy as hell. I was looking @ the EBC Red Stuff's until I heard his sedan. Every time he hits the brake pedal @ all... SQEEEAAAKKK!!! I couldn't deal w/that day-to-day. It would be embarrassing for me. Like, "Hey! What's wrong w/your car, Man?"
What brand did you use?

I've thought about doing exactly the same rotors you did (I've seen them on eBay too) and painting them before the install, inside for a better job.
Let us know how the edge painting works out, will you?

Calipers AND rotors finally DONE!!

FINALLY, I'm finished with my calipers and rotors. This last weekend I put the 3 up on jackstands, took the wheels off, and SIX hours later was finished!

The calipers still looked good from their original painting. I only had one chip on the edge of the left rear and I think I caused it when I put the wheel back on after the original painting. I touched that up and cleaned up the rest (just a little dirty from the rain, etc.).

The main problem was the rotors. Once it rained on them, anything that wasn't a braking surface turned a light orange--including every single beveled hole in the cross-drilled rotors. UGH!!

I bought a fine wire wheel brush for my cordless drill and used that on the rotor hats and outer edges. I was suprised how well it worked! Then again, there was only a light coat of rust on them. I had another wire brush attachment that I was able to use to get the rust off the beveled, drilled holes.

After cleaning away the rust/dust, I got out the left over black caliper paint from my mounting brackets, and painted all the entire rotor hats up to the edge of where the pads rub on the braking surface. I then painted the outside edges of all the rotors and got down in the front vents. If anyone wants to do this, I'd save the vents to last--It screws up your brush a bit!

After I finished with the hats and the edges, I painted every single beveled hole by using a plastic detail/touch-up "q-tip" brush that can be bought in packs from any automotive paint shop. I think the brand name was Pro-Touch or something like that. It worked great! Just really, really time consuming!

I let everything dry overnight and added the decals the next day. Thanks for the advice bbrich57, I just don't have your willpower! I think the calipers will hold up nicely. We'll see... The decals were REALLY easy to apply and I think, look great! That's

if anybody's interested.

To answer bbrich57's questions:

I have never even had the slightest squeak/squeal since I've installed my pads. I drive over 100 miles everyday to work and back, but the majority of it is highway miles. So take that into consideration. I bought my pads from NAPA. They were the best they offered for the front and back. The front are CERAMIX brake pads. Part number CMX-7947. The rear are are their semi-metallic premium brand (because they didn't have ceramic for the rear. I just checked their website--now they do). My part number is AE-7874M. The brakes are noticably grippier (is that even a word?) than they were with the stock pads. I get absolutely no dust on the front wheels and very, very little on the back. Before, with the stock pads, I was dusting the rims every other day.

"I've thought about doing exactly the same rotors you did (I've seen them on eBay too) and painting them before the install, inside for a better job.

So far, after over 300 miles of driving, the edges look perfect. No chips, cracks--nothing! Maybe too early to tell... If anyone does get those rotors, make sure you paint them or get them zinc-coated before you put them on! It should be much easier to do when they're off the car.

My wife was out of town when I did this project and had the digital camera with her so I don't have any pics without the wheels on like I had before. Wish I did, because they looked sweet! I did take some when she got back and they're posted below. Thanks for everyone's opinions and advice while I was undertaking this project. It was much appreciated!!

Hey Man, they look GREAT!! ~~ (2thumbs) ~~ (first)

And I spellchecked "grippier" and according to MS it's not a word, but we know what you mean and what does MS know anyway?? They use the term in racing all the time.

Thanks too for the brake pad info. I'll check that out!!
