need help choosing system

DOnt believe what crutchfield states as fitting or not fitting for head units. There is plenty of room for just about any aftermarket HU out there. Just get the one that you will like the most. Try to stay with the better brands like Alpine, Pioneer and Clarion for HU (Ones available on crutchfield).
For $20 more, I would get this:
Pioneer DEH-P7600MP

As far as the speakers: I would go with these instead:
Infinty Reference 6802cf
and
Infinty Reference 9603i

Save yourself a little bit of money and they will sound better.

Amplifier. If you are just going for basic sound and by the selections you made, I would say that an amp would probably not be necessary. But if you were to run some components up front, then I would definately recommend a small 2 channel to drive them and run the rear speakers off the HU

I agree, especially powered off just a HU, the reference speakers sound pretty damn nice.

also, I would stay away from anything sony (great TV's, terrible audio stuff)... get a pioneer or Alpine like Rider69 stated.

the reason i choose the sony hu was because it would match the interior lighting and also because a freind of mine also has a sony xploid hu and it sounds really nice.

also, y would cruthfield say they don't fit, aren't they just losing money that way

They have been contacted many times regarding aftermarket HU that actually do fit, but thye have yet to update their system. Check around, many people have installed HU that Crutchfield says would not fit.

Yep, I have installed several unit that crutchfield said would not fit. I have personaly called them 5 times about it.

Also, Sony is a great sounding head unit, if you've only ever heard one :D
Sony's problem is mostly in reliability, although there stats are totaly BS and sq is typicly questionable.
