I have a 2001 Protege ES with black interior and red interior lighting. I need some help finding a cd player that would go well with interior of the car. I'm trying to find a cd player with a red dispaly so it keeps the inside looking smooth. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, price range is 0 to around 150. Thanks for the help.

If your criteria is strictly color, several Sonys are accented with red (as well as their display).

There are other "custom color" capable decks.

Kenwood's KDC-MPV5025:

JVC Arsenal KD-AR600:

Of course, I don't know why I was able to go to Crutchfield and figure that out by myself.

this should be in car audio. My personal experence with sony head units isnt good. I had an explod of some kind that shitted out on me after 3 years.

true and true...but the Sony decks match the color he's looking for.

I bought a Sony cassette player about 8 years ago...it worked flawlessly until it just quit working one day. Took about 7 years to crap out.

A relatively new (at the the time) sony CD player came in a car my friend bought. It ate CDs. Literally. Then it quit playing CDs altogether.

If you're driven to get color matching components, get the extended warranty and don't worry about it.

davens, so I'm inbetween the sony and the kenwood. Basically, i just need to know which one is better? They both cost the same. Which one would be more reliable? Also, do I really need an installation kit with to install the player? Thanks again.

Neither Sony or Kenwood are typicly thought of as reliable brands at this point. Both have gone way down hill in recent years. If you decide on either, get teh warrenty. Having sold both, I know to aviod them. There basic units tend to be the most reliable though. Stay away from motorized units of any kind.

Kenwoods CD skip circuits suck so in that regard Sony would be the choice. However I'd keep looking for other alternatives.

Does the display have to be totaly red?

Thanks for the advice 1sty. So what brands or unit would you recommend purchasing? As far as the display goes, I'd like to have it red to match the inside of my car. I was leaning towards purchasing the kenwood becuase I found a good price for it. Also, I'm trying to keep the price kinda low, around 140-150. Any suggestions?

Just a thought, if you only want to spend that much...and assuming ur stock radio/cd player works fine.....why don't you just save your money instead. You won't get any cd player of outstanding quality over your stock. Save up and get something like that sony cd/mp3 player that has changable color display and a disc tray.

Only problem with that thought is that my stock cd player doesnt work.

ECLIPSE.... mmmmmmn

but alpine is just as nice, maybe even more flashy, if that is your thing

Alpine
Pioneer
Rockford Fosgate
Eclipse
Nakamichi
Clarion (they have some with red displays)
JVC (I'm not a fan but they seem to last)

1sty, why aren't you a big fan of JVC? I have only heard GotWake's JVC, but they do seem to last. I have a home unit that was purchased in the late 80's and is still working fine (not to say that their home line is the same as their car line, i mean, look at Sony). Speaking of Sony, Aiwa has the same remote and same specs as Sony (look in the latest Crutchfield). Obviously, Sony makes their head units. My head unit is dying on me. I may have to get the Alpine CDA9825. It is at $200 and has 4volt preouts. I can't find another unit that would sound as good or better with the reliability of an Alpine.

captain krm p5 bought a nice clarion with a red display. may have been a clarion pro audio deck. not sure.

imo, color matching is last on the list of criteria when it comes to purchasing a HU. its all about sound quality and functionality.

I am still researching decks and the Alpines have a problem with their displays not being bright enough in the day time even on cloudy days. Now I am a little skeptical on them. I would love to get a Pioneer DEHP8600MP, but that is over $300 :( I have car taxes coming up soon so I am hoping to get a couple of more months out of my existing CD player. It cut off on me 3-4 times on the way home from work today!

Direct sun is going to wash out any display but I have yet to have a problem with my CDA9815.

I just haven't been a impressed with JVC. There like the quite kid in the back of the class. Stays out of trouble and does well on test but is for the most part over looked.

THe upper leve eclipse units now have switchable illumination where at least teh button buttons can be switched to red that matches perfectly. The dials ont eh sides, however remain bluish white as-does the incredible display (Direct sunlight, used to glare BAD wth my clarion now I can see without issue)
