mazda3 5 door
just cause i was curious and am looking into building up my cars performance without FI....

intake (the one thing i have right now) 200
vibrant exhuast (cat back) 550
draxas header 380
fidenza fly wheel 400
mazda speed clutch 300
sr lightened pullys 400

thats pretty much it for bolt ons as far as i know... 2280 in just bolt ons and thats installing it your self....i would think with these bolt ons you should be just around 150-160hp and 140-150tq... but since this combo hasn't been done yet it could be more... could be less i am just guessing...

now for the seriuos ass shiat

cosworth intake mani 800
cosworth forged piston and rod set (12:1 comp) 1500
cams (none yet) ????
TB (none yet cosworths may bolt up?)
injectors
need a stand alone tuner now as well 850 (or more)

so i would think just a ball park but thats like 6000$$$ and thats on the light side (i didn't include shipping) and i am sure i forgot a couple things as well... plus dyno time to get that thang tuned... though it would be sweet to have close to 200whp with out FI :) .... just thought i would toss this out there and gather opinions and thoughts since an NA mazda3 really hasn't been talked about much that i know of....

that would be good for 200whp in our crappy 3rd gen fs-de engines. the 2.3MZR will see a lot more gains that we will. 200whp will be a really low estimate I figure

I agree... Im not sure if there is anything yet, but the 2.3 would definitely lay more power than 200 with those mods...

BUT, if i may ask you, if you are going forged, why not keep compression low and go FI later on? I mean stay n/a with everything listed EXCEPT 12:1 pistons, and 3-4 years down the road you can say f*ck it, and boost it to the moon.

I mean, n/a power is nice, but you will want to go F/i if you want more...

have thought about the low compression ratio but just not sure i want the abuse a FI system puts on things, have read/seen to many boom boom stories... plus if i can get some where in the 225-240 range i will be very happy...(and hope to god i don't want any more)

things to add to the NA wish list..

valve springs and head work (polishing and the such) another 1200 or so.... (if you take your head to the guy, if the shop has to do it, add another 3-500)

Take a look through focaljet and you'll see MarcyMotorsports got some great gains from the 2.3 though i can't remember where they sat. F2Focus just cracked 300, but with a MOTEC system. now how streetable are these cars?? From what Marcy says, the cams make the biggest change in the cars drivability...mind playing with the throttle when you push in the clutch so you don't stall? I think going all motor is a great way to go, FI can get pretty darn harry....but then you look at the #'s and think, crap that would be nice!

Last time I checked, a clutch wasn't a bolt on mod. Good luck with this, but it's a lot of money to dump.

Anything that doesn't require modification or building to fit properly (Read: custom work) is bolt on, really.

And yes, a full N/A build is very expensive, alas. There's many niggles and bits and pieces.

You can assume about $400 for cams reground from new billets, the ECU will probably be closer in the range of $1200+ for something that'll do all you do.

The head will be a lot wider of a range... Doing part of your own work will save you some cash, but assuming you went all out on the head, you'd be much closer to 2500+ dollars. That's assuming sodium filled inconel exhaust valves, sodium filled/hollow stainless intake valves, double valve springs, port work, resizing the quench, polishing the chambers, replacing the valve seals, lighter keepers and retainers.

Then engine coatings to help resist windage losses, as well as friction problems, and so on.

After that, start on the block, and once you get the rods and pistons in there, you'll actually want to balance the whole assembly and such, since getting a lot of power from an N/A build relies on revs a lot.

Now that you've got everything done, maybe you can start focusing on OTHER bits, like suspension... Welcome to the world of N/A tuning. =)

And I'm not sure, but I'm sure that'd yeild good results on the 2.3... The FS 2.0, something like that with a slight overbore would be pretty fun, too, but on the 2.0, you'd be hard pressed to figure that as 200whp yet, but maybe with really good tuning.

AzMz3 has the Draxas' Headers, 2.5" offroad exhaust, and AEM intake and is putting down 160+ IIRC. Some other guy has the headers, Magnaflow exhaust, and WeaponR intake and is getting 158hp.

wow thats higher then i thought with just breathing bolt ons.... if they put some lightened pullys and flywheel the revs would come so easy...

anyways, yeah the head work could deffinatly lead to some serious $$ if you start doing all of that beyond a port and polish... and are the gains worth all the extra $$? could be as no one has done anything like that as of yet... and yeah all this has to keep it streetable.... from what i got from cosworth they said the cams did a lot to their focus engine as well, and they are currently under develpment for the mzr....

with that much power i would need an lsd as well... so tack another 1500 plus install and shippin onto the total... damn thats like 10 grand at least....

dude, I love the na work on this board, but you've got to be asking yourself "why not just buy a fast car to start with?"

yeah yeah why not buy a fast car to start.... don't have the money for a faster car... i had the money for the 3... and modding is like an addiction so the more money i make the more i toss at the 3.... its scary... i mean when i am done with the stereo alone that will have cost probably around 2g my cost retial more like 3.... i should be having a career change in the next two years according to the "master plan" so until then when i have a higher income i am going to mod.... and since i don't want the stress of FI i am going NA not saying i will drop 10k into my car in the next couple years but some of these mods i deffinatly will do...

I agree, a cheap car that has been worked on and goes fast will always be cooler than any BMW or Lambo. Sure there may be only what 200 Enzos in the world, but there is only one of my car. Going all N/A is a cool option. Ever consider nitrous? Will it be effective with 12:1 compression? It may be an extra headache that you are trying to avoid with the N/A setup, but it would definately give that extra punch when needed.

you know I have been giveing the Nitrous a seruois thought lately, I was thinking maybe a 35 shot on a Zex kit. I dont know Nitrous and FI seem like big headaches

yeah if set up and used properly nitrous still can do a number on your engine... it all depends on what you want from it and whether you are going to accept the risks it involves... i haven't looked into the affects of nitrous on a higher compression engine i am sure it has been discussed on here though.... and to have 50 or so horses on tap at the push of a button is a tempting thing in deed...

The words of a poor man.
(rofl)

wtf is that supposed to mean? i too would prefer a car that i personally made fast and nice instead of just buying nice to begin with. sure i have a few exceptions (mitsubishi lancer evo, suburau impreza wrx sti, and the lotus elise) but for the most part i would rather build up my own car.
