i dunno how long you've had your car, but at a guess would say you have stinky a/c gas... take it to an a/c place and they will recharge it, and deoderise it too....
other wise i'd say you probably have water in your car... being in CA will work to your advantage, either leave your windows open a crack in the sun all day, or if you can actually leave the doors open all day or at least a few hours....

you'd have bacteria built up in your air cond filters...i get that when it's very humid in oz.
all you need to do is start up the car, turn the heat up max going to the feet area only and let is run for a while. the heat going through the filters will kill the bacteria and it should be right. takes about 20 minutes. but just make sure you do it after the car has been sitting overnight etc so the baterica has a change to become active

feet area only, so that the carpets receive heat low... also through precipitation the water (humidity) will rise....
andy i think forgot about openeing the window when you do this too....this is the quicker version of leaving the car open all day....
if that does fail, you'll just need a deoderise and re-gas, should cost more than USD$30

the reason for having only the feet area on is because that's where the air is being sucked from so you're getting the hottest air possible it to the air filter.
and make sure you do it with the windows closed. for the same reason again - gets the air hotter - but also because air cond works by dehumidifying the air.
leave it for 20-30 minutes and you'll be right
