my radio blew up

:
2003 Mazda Protege 5
okay so I was sitting in my car and the stereo was on and all of the sudden a huge thud went off and it smelled like smoke. My radio doesn't work anymore, I don't know if a fuse blew or what. Any ideas?

ya the guy who had the car before me had it wired for speakers and stuff. I think that he did it himself and did it really bad.

That being the case, it wouldn't be surprising to find a couple speaker wires touching behind the radio or in a door causing a short. That'd be my guess.

If he wired it for a subwoofer check that first, you'll find a lead wire off your battery running to the trunk, usually. If this is still live, its dangerous.

psh. no. actually my zune fm connector was on and it wasn't playing anything. he does have the main lines in the back. there are like multiple colorful chords haha. what should I be checking?

There should be 2 wires, either 8ga or 4ga, one will be power and the other ground. You can follow the wire from your battery and about a foot away, there should be a fuse block. If there is no fuse in there, your fine. Those wires wouldn't be causing your problem.

A little blue wire will be the remote. That gets signal, usually from a head-unit, to turn on the amp. If he hooked this up himself, he may have used the stock headunit. He may have left this wire hooked up to a remote source.

If you have access to a voltmeter or test light, you could check and see if there is current going through any of the wires. If there is, then you've found your problem.

If not, then you may have to pull the radio from the dash, and inspect the wiring behind it.

Hope this helps!!

Well at least it was just a stock head unit. Used ones on here are cheap or take the opportunity to upgrade it.(thumb)
