My new "RAM AIR" setup..

I picked up a K&N drop in filter and decided to really feed some air to it. I removed the factory air ducting and replaced it with 3" flex tubing(5 bucks, Home Depot). I hammered a 3" to 5" tin cone into a rectangle and secured it to the vent in the car's lower engine cover. Voila... ram air! I feel the difference on those parkway merges when the RPM's get over 4k. Nice air whoosh noises too. It doesn't sound like a clogged vacuum anymore.

Eventually I'd like to do it with some nice elbows & tubing.

Some guy did this with black ABS pipe, looked a little cleaner than yours, but the same idea. I'm sure he will post his pics shortly.

Looks good though, nice work.

not gonna lie, thought about doing that myself at one point or another lol. why not just remove the airbox entirely and duct tape a filter to a peice of pipe?

Ram air DOes nothing.....I would Put $100 Dollars there is not 1 HP change from using that...to removing it and re-installing the factory turn elbow back on it.

Your butt dyno lies to you.

I confess..and a little embarassed...I "played" around with this last year. Before I changed suspension and I was at stock height. The thought of having a short ram but still having cool air was interesting. I used a weapon R ram air scoop and their heavy duty "drier hose". I can't say I saw much of a difference except maybe highway and the scoop got torn off three days later leaving out of a parking lot. I scrapped the whole project and have since just had the short ram set up. Ignore the bird poop covered fender in the first picture.

I doubt there would be much ram effect under there compared to using the radiator opening or even the foglight hole. Ram effect is real (flying some aircraft you can watch the Torque or Manifold Pressure increase with speed), but it's pretty insignificant at road legal speeds, compared to the risk of Foreign Object Damage or hydrolock. Blocking off the transaxle cooling and having the air intake so low might not be a very safe way of getting ram air, but it's good to see pictures of peoples ideas anyway.

I'm the one who did it with ABS piping. Do a bit of search and you'll find some pics on this forum. But mine dosen't go all the way down, it's only inside the edge of the top hole. Anyway, I'm planning to make some skid plates for the entire under-engine area and i'll make an opening for some fresh air! (Like the one Corksport sells...I think).

Edit: Did the search for you ---- http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123701374
