Well as most of you know there is a NA tech race right now for the first to get to 200whp. One of the requirements is to have a build thread. So today I decided to go for it after purchasing some 10:4 to 1 J-Spec pistons from a forum member here.

My engine purformence mods so far are as follows:

OBX headers
MSP Racing Beat axleback
MAM catless midpipe
Injen CAI
P&P intake manifold with VTCS removel
Thermal intake manifold spacer
Magnecor wires
E3 diamond tech. spark plugs
OBX UDP(to be installed)
Weapon-R torque damper

My next perchase will be for adjustable cam gears. After that I plan to get JDM camshafts, Microtex LT10 standalone EMS, P&P head, light weight pulleys, and so on.

EDIT: WILL NO LONGER BE IN THE RUNNING FOR THIS, SORRY (sad2) (sad2) (sad2)

Here is the OBX billet alluminum UDP that I should be getting and installing this week:

Here are the pistons I just ordered(thanks to Jimmysuite!) that will be shipping out today:

Here is the work I did on my MSP Racing Beat axleback last weekend. I had to take off about 4.5" off the tip to fit onto my P5. This is what replaced my loud ass P5 Mazdaspeed axleback, sounds alot quieter and deeper now. I am lovin it. Now for the pics:

looks nice man, i wanted to do the na build, but to spend that much money i figured i could get more pwr if i went turbo. sounds like you got a pretty good plan set up, however the obx header my hinder you a little bit. If you could get a awr 4-1 or some custom longer running header that could help a little bit.

Thanks. I didn't like the idea of going FA. To risky, and I would be plenty happy with 200-250 HP. By the way the OBX is a 4-1 header and it works great

oops duh i meant 4-2-1, like the awr. I know OBX works great but somewhere in the na section someone posted about headers and equations of flow etc etc and the obx is good(i know i have it), but to get to the 200 na whp, the obx is just not gonna cut it, they posted that long running headers is minimal if not custom. thats just my 2 cents, cause i would love to see you reach 200 whp!

Cool, thanks for the tip. Do you have a link to that thread? That would be much appreciated. Any idea how much more HP a 4-2-1 header will get me?

Good luck...Read Intallshields entire history of his N/A build...He was probably #1 in the building of the N/A FS-DE... It will give you an idea of what you may have just gotten yourself into...He topped at about 190-197whp...with crazy...CRAZY!!! mods...He was pushing 8,250 redline with 13:1 compression...with custom and built top and bottom end...

I'd put the sights on something a bit more reasonable...If you hit 175whp, you'd be in a very select club...and faster than a lot of MSPs...

Yah, 175whp would be alot more feasable, aspecially since this car is a daylly driver. I would probably be happy with 175whp, but I have to at least try for the 200whp. Thanks for the tips, I will check out Installshields build and see if he can drop some knowledge on my build.

Awesome stuff! we have a build thread! :)

Just a couple of quickies....

problem with the obx is the short runners - its "tuned" to an RPM you'll never get to with the FSDE.

i reckon it would be well worth you while redoing your exhaust for outright performance.

The OBX will be the limiter.

I'd also be looking for something a little more agressive than the J-Spec cams - something custom ground, or a set of twiggy cams if you can find a forum member willing to sell them (you're going for cam gears, so FI cams could be purchased, then just dial in the overlap back to NA specs).

Glad to see someone has finally pulled the gloves off and started this! :) i'll be watching closely..

Good luck!

Is there anything I can do to fab up and modify my existing headers? Or should I just go with a different header all together?

I decsided on the JDM camshafts just cause there alot cheaper than the Integral camshafts, but I guess if I am going to do this right I should save a bit more for the Integral camshafts. Do you think there will be much of a difference between the two.

So thanks for the support and encouragement. The slow part of this will be just saving for the parts.

subbin..............keeping an eye on the competition.........(wink)

different header all together.

The exhaust system is critical.

If you can afford it, get burnstainless to knock something up for you, if not, you will need to work out your lengths (google for some formulas) and get an exhaust shop to make something up for you.

Camshafts, well - the AUDM version of the car came with jdm cams, and they run out of legs by about 6k rpm.. given that youa re going to want to stretch your redline a little, you will probably want something better. Integral cams are one option - another option would be a second hand set of twiggy sticks... finally, you could arrange to have your own custom set ground.

Would a tubular design for headers kind of like they do in turbo manifolds help at all? It would make the exhaust tubes longer I would think.

not sure i'm following..

but you don't just want to "make the exhaust tubes longer"...you need to make them to a tuned length.

The goal is to make 1 exhaust pulse from 1 cylinder, reach the collector at or slightly after the next exhaust valve opens. A negative pressure wave will then assist in "sucking" that pulse out, improving pumping efficiency.

obviously, this can only occur at a certain RPM....the longer the runners, the earlier this will occur.

I suggest you ring up a few places who are reknowned for making racing headers.... burnsstainless comes to mind but they would be rather expensive...you can give them a call though, and see what kind of price they would be asking...their headers look very very nice...you'd be buying a lot of engine bling at the same time if you got them to knock up your pipes :)

Unfortunately, I don't think 200 NA whp is possible with strickly off-the-shelf parts. Alot of custom work/parts are going to be needed.

And while the OBX might be a limiter, the AWR header (which is no longer produced) isn't going to help much anyway.

Good luck with your build anyway though. I'm setting my sights a little lower- 150 whp with my sport auto. One of the main reasons for the lower goal is that my car is also my daily driver and I can't afford to have it offline for too long. And it's an auto so I'm already at a disadvantage.

Yah I am going to start with the bolt on's like standalone EMS, cam gears, Integral camshafts, high compression pistons(that I already purchased), port and pollishing my head, etc. Then I will see were I am at with all that then plan accordingly maybe custome make some headers and an intake manifold, and better exhaust. If I haft to I might over bore my cylinders and get bigger pistons.

So this is my daily driver as well but I have my wifes car to use when I need it.

I found burnsstainless's website and it has some good info on exhaust theory.

I am going to try and contact him to see what he can do for me.

nice thread... im subbin too to keep an eye out on the competition... just remember its 100whp per Liter... so you need only ~199.5whp so idk if that .5 is going to help...

get a DYNO soon so we know where your at!!
