My Mazdaspeed BLEW a HOLE!!!!

You'll never guess what happened to me the other day. First about a month ago my car got vandalized so it was at the body shop for about a month. So the day I picked up the car, I was driving on the hwy and shifted to 4th gear. The car pulled hard(I have no boost guage yet) and then I heard a loud POP noise. Then the car died. First I thought the motor detenated. So after pulling over I pop the hood open and there it was, a HUGE hole in the pipe comming out of the turbo. When I felt the plastic pipe in was really soft. My understanding of why this happened was the cause of to much heat and pressure. Just to let you know I had the vacume hose to the wastegate open to the air, which is like not having a wastegate. I was in the process of reinstalling the profec B, but at the time it was not installed. Anyway the car runs like CRAP!! It will not idle, I taped the hole up with duck tape, but still runs like CRAP!. So I dropped the car off at the dealer and waiting for a report on it.

Anybody else have this problem with the PLASTIC intercooler pipes??

I've had an issue with the pipe breaking at the joint where the BPV tube meets the I/C piping.

Wonder what the dealer will say about the hose being off...

umm....so if you're running without a wastegate and no boost controller....doesn't that mean the turbo will boost to however high it physically can? it's no wonder something blew. btw, why did you do this?

Why are you driving around without the wastegate attached to the vacum hose?

my I/C pipe aslo blew at the flex part by the exhaust mani. and it was at stock boost. but dood it not too smart to run w/o an wastegate.

(lol)

I am wondering why this was posted he answered his own question and made a obvious mistake! This why Mazda is so timid about putting out Mazdaspeed cars Because of people that play with them and don't know what they are doing. Then they expect warranty to cover ther mistake.

(stupid) No other way to explain it dood. You screwed up, dont try and claim it as Warranty, cause you will **** us all, with your ignorance. (werd)

No need to flame him and put him down. He made a mistake. Now all he is asking for is help and advice.

Just don't do what that WRX owner did.

Yeah I remember that thread over on some WRX forum, where a guy blew his engine from overboosting and not knowing what he was doing...then asked for help and some guy emailed all the dealers in the area the thread so the guy could not get it fixed under warranty...thats pretty messed up. I dont think you should be ignorant and try and screw the dealer for a clear mistake, but I also dont think people need to narc on others...

Thanks guys for the amusing responses! I was just posting a stituation that I thought was RARE in the case of BOOSTED cars. If a manufactor will put out a system such as the one on the MSP, that they would take precautions and protect the heated areas. For everybody's info I had the vacume hoses set up and plummed into the cabin with out the Pro fec B box hooked up. Yes I was totaly aware that the car would over boost if pushed past stock limits, but at the same time the FACTORY fuel cut off would kick in. Also the vacume hose was exposed to the air. Thats what I ment when I say that the car was running without a wastegate. For those who aren't familar with the MSP system IT DOES COME WITH A WASTEGATE ATTACHED TO THE TURBO ITSELF). but at the same time the FACTORY fuel cut off would kick in. So my amazement is on how this system was designed in the first place. The hose blew because of high heat fatigue and pressure combined.

The PLASTIC hose that comes off the turbo is a HARD PLASTIC until it reaches the flex part of the hose and after that point the plastic becomes extremely soft when heated. So when you drive the car for a consistantly long time(such as on the hyw) that part will be a lot weeker. So my conclusion would be that after down shifting and accelerating the plastic pipe blew because of fatigue.

Also I believe I would know what I'm doing because I've been in this sport for over 10yrs. I currently have a 1993 RX7 which I work on myself. So I am quite aware of turbo system. The car currently pushes 440 to the wheels!

So thanks again guys for the replys and I'll keep everyone posted on what the dealer says on monday.

Well, knowing how a wastegate works might have helped. There is no way in hell I'd drive around with the wastegate not being able to regulate manifold boost pressure.

Yes, the stock plastic pipes are bad. but quite a few people have pushed more than stock boost levels on the stock equipment.

I personally drove 1 hour back and forth to Iowa City, at a constant speed of 90-95 mph in 90 degree weather and never had a problem.

Oh, BTW, good luck at the dealer. Hope everything turns out okay.

Sucks you blew your motor, but if youve been in the game for 10 years, then what were you thinking not running with your wastegate attached. What do you think a wastegate does...

I dont wanna flame or sound arrogant or anything, but sorry, your fault... you shoulda known what not running a wastegate did, and then why oh why would you downshift at highway speeds?

i'm no expert, but wasnt there a thread stating that there was no factory fuel cut, and that it had to do with the MAF not being able to read the increased air moving past it? So you figured u could boost as far as 12psi, but in reality the fuel cut, depending on the weather could be 9 psi or 20 psi, that doesnt sound like a compentant tuner to me?
