Is the illegality because of glare to oncoming drivers from lights that weren't factory installed? It seems the law would be reversed. That only professional installers can do the job....not any "jo-schmoe" that's never done it before. Very strange.:mad:

yea well read law books and youll find everything is pretty much ass backwards...
Heres the issue at hand... they were not illegal a year ago and many people bought them, SO to stop everyone from carrying a reciept around they stopped anyone from selling them or installing. Now if you buy them from canada or on ebay from a person they cant stop you from installing it and saying youve had them forever.

If you want to keep your brights, switch to the Protege5 headlights then get the HIDs.
i got my lights from here a couple months ago. In fact that is my car on the top banner, and my friends Saleen. My friend did an overhaul of their site last month and put the pic of both or cars on there 
I know a few other people from this board have bought from the same guy without any complaints so I would definantly recommend them .

Actually no.. most people don't need HIDs. There are some people who don't even like them.SP33D said:they are.. but it's not gonna stop me or anyone else that i knoweveryone needs HID's
The Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy released a 66 page report for the NHTSA that has some very interesting information on vehicle lights including what ones are most visible, what cause the most glare and discomfort for other drivers. It might be worth a read before you drop several hundred dollars on set of HIDs.

That said, the other site that some one mentioned has a FAQ section. In it the following question is posed, "12) Are HID lights legal?"
12)In 2002 the DOT banned the sale of HID lights, due to the fact that "light is scattered", "glares affected other drivers", "were improperly focused." HID lights should be used for off-road and show purposes only. The lights should and have to be properly aligned, please look in your manual, it should be listed under leveling or adjusting.
Yes I'm one of those people that greatly dislikes aftermarket HIDs. Most people don't aim them correctly and I end up being blinded. That's not safe for either driver.
I don't expect to change your mind about buying HIDs because they are "hawt", but at least get a professional to aim them after you install them.

Did you do the 6000k lights? And if you get a high/low kit you will still retain hi/lo campatability correct?
I agree it may not be hard to aim them, but many people (myself included) do not know the correct way (angle, etc) to aim them. Recall that part of the reason that the NHTSA was able to help get these things outlawed was because of improper aiming. That leads me to believe, there's a little more than just driving up to a wall. But I could be mistaken (have been before)...SenorCorwin said:
