MSP Handling vs. Evo Handling

I drove a brand new 2004 EVO. I no longer wanted to buy one afterwards. I'll take my MSP over an EVO any day. Very similar g's on the skid pad, so I do not think its a case of one out handling the other. For the additional cost, the EVO should have better performance numbers, stock vs stock.
Yep. I also drove an EVO and STi. I think I'd go for the scoob if I were to trade in my MSP. The drivers side footwell in the EVO was not comfortable for me.

haha im seriuos, my next car is gonna be a tt or something like that. cant be driving econoboxes forever

Sorry to take so long to reply, okay no I dont have the msp anymore, I did have an 03 black evo but my dad took over it awhile back and I kept the msp, I just traded the MSP for the MR , though I cant open the MR up yet due to break in, but so far it feels ALOT better than the GSR (to me). I love the the MR, my wife bought an msm.

That should clear everything up.

i would get the audi TT over the evo. can i compare them ?
My buddies GF's uncle (i know seems strange) has an audi TT, (if that car was given to me I wouldnt keep it, I really dont like the TT. I wouldnt compair the two at all) I would take my wifes msm over the TT.

Interesting question. I remember way back on that infamous article where our beloved MSP-turbo(MP3) was in a shootout with the Ferrari, Elise et-al, the authors claimed that a cars handling is ULTIMATELY determined by the driver. How that cars handling inspires (or doesnt) inspire confidence to push the car to its engineered limit. I really really agree with that definition of what the term "handling" ultimately means.
Thats why I really adore our MSP's handling b/c it really inspires confidence to approach its limits, limits which are pretty damn high. :) And it is easy rectify the situation when the limits are crossed. I have a friend with a S2000, a car that theoretically should have better handling than our MSP. However, TO ME, the MSP gives me more confidence to approach the limits. Its probably because Im somewhat of a young novice performance driver in that Ive only had FWD cars. Nonetheless at this point in time TO ME the MSP is a better handler.

Now to the question. I havent driven every car but of those I have driven, the EVO, MSP and ITR are my favorite. The MSP and ITR are really similar in that they are extremely tossable, more tossable than the EVO. In a small very tight parking lot Id take these 2 cars before a EVO. This is attributed to their sub 3000 lb weight whereas a EVO is about 3300 lbs. In the automotive world 500+ lbs is significant.
The AWD EVO doesnt have the torque steer around corners like the FWD cars and to me has a stiffer chasis than the MSP, altho not by much. In a competition situation Id take the EVO no doubt, but for extremely twisty roads Id take the MSP/ITR.

I have a simple test for if a car is a true performace handler. If it can make me say: Holy Sh!t when I drive it thru the twisties than it passes the test. Both the MSP and EVO passed that test. :)

As you can see from my sig that I have had the chance to own both a Evo VIII, Evo VI TME, and MSP. The MSP is a great handler but just can't keep up with the Evo. I would say the the handling characteristics are very similar but on the Evo you have the AWD and brute powerr that makes it that much faster.

I only race on road courses and the AWD and power adds up to about 3-4 secs on VIR full and on Summit Point its about 2-3 secs. On the Auto-x course it's about even though when you take out the power differential.

All around the Evo is a better car and a much better daily then the MSP

BTW - For the record I was pwnd by a MSP on R-compounds my first time to VIR in the Evo. After about three sessions (and getting to know the car better) I was running a tad better then him. Take that for what it's worth

Well, I just got back from the mitsu dealership. Test drove an MR, and let me say it was the most fun I've ever had. The 6 speed feels amazing, and the power is awesome. There's a slight possibility one might be in my future in early 05 :). Even if I don't get one, test driving that thing made my day. Heck, it made my year lol.

Just got to beat on an MR this morning...it just rolled off the truck, got PDI-ed, and me and another sales guy and a tech went out in it for a half hour or so. The beating this car sustained from the three of us was astounding. We did nothing but punish the tranny and tires every which way!! I like it waaaaay better than the RS I drove before. The car held up very well to the abuse, and was by far one of the most responsive cars I have ever driven. I was amazed at the power even with three big guys in the car. But $37k!?!?!?!?! **** yewwwww Mitsu!!

God damn, I could have 2 MSPs for the price of an EVO MR. s***, I could do an AWD conversion, coilovers, bigger sway bars, Gt30R turbo kit, and still have money left over for the same price as an EVO MR. Good luck with that.

^yup. The dealership here offered us ~35,495+fees, which is a reasonable price I think. They said that was open to negotiation so I'm sure 35k OTD is within reach easily. Driving that car was one of the most fun things I've ever done. If you just look at the steering wheel the car turns instantly. It made me giddy.

I view the msp as the pinnacle of FWD handling and the evo as the best AWD handler in our market

but don't take my word for it... I've driven neither! (beer)

The MSP's suspension feels harsh as hell to me. Over any moderate bump or road imperfection the whole car slams real hard, the whole dash just about shakes. Then again I live in NJ, ******* piece of s*** roads everywhere you go

i agree with you on that, i don't know what it is NJ roads suck so much.

But it is kind of rough.

An MSP isnt comparable to an EVO? Stock straight line acceleration..Ill agree.

Handling..nope

Tell that to RT who had a MP3 outslalom the EVO. And also had the MP3 have higher cornering G (centripetal force) through the corners at buttonwillow than the EVO.

An MSP on R compounds will **** an EVO. Yeah I know thats not fair but put R compunds on a Honda Accord and it will still lose to the EVO.

Ill agree the EVO is a better overall car than the MSP..no doubt. But dont underestimate the MSP/ITR/Spec V R Tune fwd handlers...they can beat an EVO on the right track.
