MSP cams... j-spec cams...

there are only 2 aftermarket cams available for the P5.

there's the j-spec intake and the mazdaspeed exhaust. dont get confused with mazdaspeed protege cams. they are the same as your car.

mazdaspeed is no longer making their exhaust cam, so an easy way to get it is to buy the j-spec intake, then get the pin on your stock intake cam changed over the exhaust side. there go you, mazdaspeed exhaust cam.

seriously, dont get me started on shane racing.....i'm not a fan of theirs...false advertising :wtf: there is NO SUCH THING as a mazdaspeed intake cam. it's a load of crap. oh and rather expensive too

from what i have gathered as well, the exhaust cam they advertise as a mazdaspeed exhaust cam is just a reworked stock intake cam (pin switched around so it fits the exhaust side) and they file the code on the camshaft off so you cant see what it was originally. doesnt sounds good to me

Exxy tho'.....
The exhaust cam separately is $20 more than the inlet. ????

I notice they have adjustable cam gears "coming soon".
Twilight will be happy :)

i'm getting my cam gears from tri-point engineering. they already make them....

but really, all you yanks save yourselves a lotta money and just get the stock intake cam changed to an exhaust cam....instant mazdaspeed exhaust cam

Who you callin a yank?? :) TTY
Then corksport is probably the best place to get the intake cam then? TTY

twilight:
What model do you get the intake cam from (MSP/P5/Protege)?

I have installed the J-Spec intake cam but as we all know there are no mazdaspeed exhaust cams. Can I switch the pin from my OEM intake cam to a mazdaspeed exhaust pin..?? Is that what you are talking about? or am I all messed up..

I should be able to pick this pin up from the dealer...

Thanks Chris

curt2go - yanks, canadians...you're all the same ;) j/k

best place to get an intake cam - prob corksport for new, but you might be able to find some 2nd hand cams around...esp considering us aussie have the j-spec intake cam as stock. i sold my intake cam to a mate of xelderx. and the good thing about cams, they are made out of extremely strong metal, so wear is pretty much non-existant. my cam i sold had about 40,000k's on them and no signs of wear at all.

chris - my cams are custom. i bought blanks and had them ground to specs me and my cam guy decided on.
so yep, that's exactly right, you can get the stock intake cam swapped over to an exhaust cam. mazda wont have a pin. you'll have to take the intake and stock exhaust cam to a cam place, they'll then drill out where the new pin hole should be on the intake cam for the exhaust side and swap the pin over to it.

now the best thing with doing that, if you take the j-spec intake cam along with you, you can get the cam place to dial in whatever valve overlap you like...so being a turbo'd car, you'd be best of with minimal overlap - 0-2degrees at most.

Thanks alot for the info. I will be senidng mine in once my engine is out..

Did you notice any differance with the coolant line to the TB gone?

Chris

not really. i'm sure it helps, but not something i'd notice because i took the hoses off when i did the head and cam work. just dont go taking off the TB coolant hoses if around you ever gets below freezing. i dont have the problem here.

Yea I will keep that in mind considering its suppost to get down to -25'c tonight... This car is should be parked for the winter but I had a minor disagreement with my winter beater, the first snow fall it decided that it liked the tree more than me and yea its a long story.., now im driving the protege untill I can fix it which is almost done..
