MS3 Short Shifter?

It is a bit long of a throw but I like the actualy shifter's length.
I'd just like it to be a closer set group of throws.
and reverse is just fine for me

I just want to shorten the throw, not the length. I will have to take apart the shifter and take a peek at it. I will try TWM and see what they say.

It is very easy to get to the shifter, open the center console and pull up the drink holder part, then the part where the shifter is pops up as well.

yeah goto the hardware store and buy a bunch of washers and just return what doesnt work

good idea dread... might have to try this

There are actually more than washers, I would wait until some one designs them specifically for the ms3.

keep the info coming. Im actually thinking about getting this soon. Today was the third time I grinded third.. not sure why. think im used to the throw in the mx-5 ..

I would be very suprised if they fit....the Ford and Mazda Models are not as alike as everyone thinks.

I would just hold out for TWM, with the success that they have had with there 3 STS they would make one for the Speed 3. I love my TWM STS.

I can't say it enough, ONLY BUY A SHIFTER THAT IS MADE FOR YOUR CAR IF YOU EXPECT IT TO WORK. The only reason the bushings may fit is the base of the shifter on my speed3 is almost identicle to the one on my standard 3 and I am sure mazda uses standardized bolts.

I've grinded going from second to third twice since I've owned the Speed3. I don't get it either. I don't think this gearbox is "silky smooth." It's pretty good, but my SE-R shifter was much smoother. I would LOVE to make the throw shorter.

its not for the speed3 it is for the standard 3. The speed3 comes stock with a short shifter, I own a regular 3 and a speed 3 and trust me the throws are much shorter. I also have a mazdaspeed sport shifter installed on my regular 3 and the speed3 still has shorter throws.

That's a bummer, because this is a joke of a short shifter. I had one on my GTI and you barely had to move the shift lever. I don't consider this one short at ALL. I hope someone comes out with a kit soon.

I agree, this car could really use a nice short throw shifter, and for anyone who says the stock one is a short throw has never driven a car with a true short shifter.

I'm wondering if the Steeda Shifter for the SVT focus which was also a 6 speed would fit.

I just came from an SVTF to the MS3. The reverse gear doesnt require you to press down on the shifter, so i doubt it would work. Plus it's a different engine and more importantly, a different transmission.

I have driven cars with short throws before, I know the speed 3 isn't the shortest throw but it is reasonable. I want aluminum bushing to tighten up but I don't need any shorter throws, just more precise because this thing is rubbery as hell.

uhh...no the ms3 does NOT have a shorter throw than a 3 with a TWM

I never said it did and how do you know have you driven both. I was just driving my 04 3 with the mazdaspeed sport shifter and the seem about equal to my speed 3. What is really noticable is the precision on the shifter in my 04 3 due to the aluminum bushings. I have missed shifts in the speed 3 because it is sloppy and inconsistent. I am contacting twm today to see if they have any bushings that will fit the speed 3. I am not saying that the throws cannot be made shorter on the speed 3, because they can, I am just saying that they are relatively short compared to most stock cars and I am not sure that I want a shifter that just cuts the height of the stock shifter making it more difficult to shift.

I just got off the phone with TWM and they said they have developed a shifter for the speed6 and just need to do the final testing and measuring before it is ready. I asked if the bushings would be the same for the speed3 as the regular 3. He said it was likely because the are the same for the regular 6 and speed 6. He also said that the installation should be easier on the speed3 than the regular 3 if it is similar to the speed 6. The bushings would cost 36.00 shipped. They will not have a shifter for the speed 3 until at least february because they do not expect to have a speed3 to work with until january. Maybe some canadian speed 3 owners could offer the use of their cars. I am sending them pictures of the speed3 assembly ASAP and may try to fit the regular 3 bushings on the speed 3.

Please let us know what you come up with. I would really like to put those bushings in. But if they are not out yet then we obviously have to wait. So let me get this straight......There will be 2 choices for the shifter-1) bushing kit--not avaliable. 2) Shifter assembly--not avaliable. Do I have this right?
