hey, i'm just wondering what mpg you guys are getting with the k&n drop in filter. i've noticed that mine seemsto have dropped. pre-k&n i could get 350 miles before i needed to fill up. that was combined city/highway. four tanks straight with the k&n i've averaged a little over 300mpg before filling up. i don't think i've driven any harder, that's why i observed more than one tank. i just had the oil changed right before switching to the new air filter, also.

just remember the weather has an effect on MPG, as well as the gas they change to in the winter.

I've noticed my milage has dropped even with nothing changed, no change in driving habits either.

(i dont have the drop in filter though, just giving some thoughts on the topic)

My gas mileage went to hell after they started using the alcohol for the winter... from about 340 miles per tank to 300 (if I'm lucky). Which begs the question: Does it really help the environment all that much if you have to burn MORE of it?? Whatever...

thanks guys.

i was just wondering if i was the only one. so what's this about changing the gas for the winter?

When the weather gets cooler, youre intake is sucking the cooler air, cooler air is more dense and it needs more fuel to burn so your car will run a little bit richer. thats why most cars runs better when its cold outside, its peppier and more responsive. Anyway, both on my Miatas and P5,it seems to drop around 3 mpg on winter time.

your gas mileage should actually go UP with a drop in filter. theorectically it should make the engine more efficient and easier to breathe thus better MPG.

There is nothing that cures bad gas mileage for a lead foot :D
(Your Honor, I pleade GUILTY as charged)

I've noticed a decent gain (+5-6mpg hwy/+3-4 city) with the K&N and Bosch plugs I put in... I put the filter in first and immediately nticed better mileage, in the 3mpg area... after I put the plugs in, I noticed a bit more power, and a bit better mileage...

dumb question????

So where are ya'll getting this K&N drop in filter from.....AutoZone????

ajusa.com $29.97 for the filter another $10 for the cleaning kit. not to mention free shipping.

i went to auto zone and they wanted $49.95 for the filter alone, no thanks.

I got mine at Autozone for $30 or so... It's available on their website, part number is 33-2134. The store special-ordered mine from their warehouse and it came in the next day.

I just remembered that I heard a rumor a while back about the oil from the filters messin with the MAF or something like that, but not exactly sure....anyone know what I'm talkin about???

you guys are lucky I must be driving the s*** out of my car I get about 200 to 250 per tank

You have bigger issues... I'm just hitting 210 with 1/2 a tank, and that's mostly city driving. when was your last oil change/tune-up? how many miles are on your car?

gcotton-
do you have a stock filter or the K&N or what?
I'd stop by the dealership and have them check over the car... even with the stock filter and my "drive-it-like-you-stole-it" style when I first got the car I was getting 300+ mpt (miles per tank).

i have read in several places that the K&N lets too much dirt into your engine, and that if you want more air you should go with a foam drop in. Trouble is, I can't find a foam drop in for a 2003 protege es - anybody know of one ?
