MP3 refused to accelerate?!

On a few recent out-of-town trips, I noticed some problems for my MP3 to accelerate. In all cases, the car was running in 5th gear @ ~3500 rpm. No matter how much I stepped on the gas, the car remain at constant speed / rpm. Once I down shift to 4th gear, get the engine up to over 4500 rpm, up shift back to 5th, and the car will start to respond in 5th gear. (although sometimes I have to do this two or three times in a row to get 5th going)

Since I don't do long distance highway trips much, I haven't noticed this problem in the past. Am I missing something fairly obvious? Or should I get it checked out?

Hmm, that is odd. How many miles do you have on your MP3? Have considered taking it in to the dealer to have it checked up?

what the hell does that have to do with the engine?

his engine has NO power in 5th gear, he has no problem shifting

If the shifter fork is bent maybe the gear isn't engaging and that is why nothing happens?

if they gear isn't engaging why is the car running at 3500 rpm in "supposedly" 5th gear?

from what I understand a lot of the gibbled trannies on the board report a bent shift fork, perhaps her si bent which prevents forth gear from disengaging properly which is keeping it in 4th. That would explain things.

Just a guess. Haven't seen anything else that would explain the problem.

Don't think it's a shift problem. I agree that if it's a shift problem, I should be running at higher rev when in 5th gear, just like when I downshift to 4th.

Dealer said they can't find out why. I think they didn't drive it hard enough to get to the 'problem zone'. Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems to be getting more reluctant as time goes by ... :(

if the clutch is bad and it's slipping, the engine will be revving, not staying at the same RPM after flooring it
