Mount How-To

for the passenger's side insert, how the hell do you get the mount to slide off the thing that attaches to the motor? i have the inserts, just no instructions.

If I remember correctly, you actually leave that part on and just unbolt the whole mount. Then very very carefully take the insert and work it through the whole bracket. If you have some soap and water and a flat head screwdriver, it will probably take about 30 mins depending on how strong and fast you are.

I made my own thread with the questions, but thought I'd post it here too

Yesterday I installed the Front and BOTH Side motor mounts. I am using Medieval motor mounts. For those curious, total time was 2.5hrs (front litterally took 10minutes) and I was using a hoist at a garage.

The question I have was for the driver's side mount. How tight does the main bolt (the very long one that runs through the polyurethane bushing) need to be? If you tighten it REAL tight, the bushing begins to balloon, but if you don't tighten it enough the mount is able to freely move. Remember this mount is attached to a large metal bracket that gets bolts to the transmission.

The other question I had was about the two smaller washer and two smaller bolts that the set of 4 medieval mounts came with. The very large bolt and washer and nut was used on the passenger side mount. The two smaller bolts I determined are used for the front mount. I am left with the two smaller washers. What are they for.

I have not installed the rear mount.

Okay, how about a 1st impression review

Before, I knew the mounts were at least very soft and certainly on their way out. I would get wheel hop sometimes if my clutching out wasn't perfectly in-sync with the gas pedal. Generally, you could just tell and feel the motor was moving around TOO much.

I really have no intention of modifying this car. I don't want it lowered, I don't need an exhaust, etc. So my goal with these mounts was to remove the horribly-poopy wheel hop and other negative aspects of crappy mounts while maintaining a near vibrationless and quiet car.

I installed the two side mounts and the front mount from Medieval.

First off, the vibrations. Well, at idle it is not bad. It certainly is noticable from worn stock mounts, but if my idle dips (probably cause of EGR) then it is really bad. At speed and driving around you feel in the pedal and steering wheel, but is really isn't bad. At different RPMs you'll notice different things in the car will hit a resonance point and that is what PISSES me (and probably you) off the most. For example, my rear-vew mirror attachment (for a large one) vibrates around 3k. ARGGH. So, off I go to try and pad it so how. Of course, I would expect that over the course of 3 months or so the poly-urathane bushing will wear in and the vibrations will decrease, no less than how stock rubber mounts wear-in and go softer over time.

Secondly, motor noise. This is the aspect of going away from stock mounts that worries me most. The Protege5 is already not the quietest car. Certainly quieter than my old '92 Golf, but in stock form it was perfectly lovely to me. I should note, I care about engine noise only at sustained highway speeds. Well, with just these 3 mounts installed it is already noticeably louder. So much so, that I have doubts about keeping all three installed. At highway speeds, as well (though there are no vibrations to really care about or notice) the amount of additional engine noise that is heard is- at this point- too much for me and what I want out of this car. For example, I car hear this odd whiny-whistly kinda sound when I press the gas; I can hear the transmission far more; I can hear all the grunts and growls more now from the engine.

So there it is.
Shifting = AMAZING
Wheel-Hop = Non-Existent
Performance = Improved as power is put to the ground far better
Gas Pedal Input Repsonse = Much smoother, especially in 1st trying to creep along in stop and go traffic and you try to feather gas pedal.

I will NOT be installing the rear mount right now, and maybe not at all, ever. The three Medieval Mounts are holding the engine VERY still. I checked, it isn't moving a bit. I hear the rear mount transmits the most vibrations. I don't need any more. I'll be wearing in these three in over the course of the next few months, but at that point I may opt to revert back to stock mounts or some combination of medieval's and stock.

Here's a question to you folks, which of the 4 mounts, removes wheel-hop et al? Front? Which mount(s) should I revert back to stock to reduce engine noise? Driver's side one?

Cheers.

p.s. IF Medieval's mounts are supposed to provide the LEAST amount of vibrations & engine noise (they go hand-in-hand really) then I have NO idea how anyone could stand anything stiffer. LOL!

well any new mount is gonna have a break in time so after running some the vibes will more than likly back off some

So if your inserting these into a mount that is completely torn and worthless, do you just rip our the old rubber inserts?

The inserts fit in the old mount...if the mount is pretty much destroyed, you will need to replace it, but if it is just torn, inserts will firm it back up.

Pic? How bad is it?

Ill try to snatch a couple on my phone, im pretty sure the rubber mouth is pretty much crushed on the passenger side, this is also where the engine seems to be getting most of its rocking motion during acceleration. What would be the best aftermarket mount for me to buy?

Just installed the passenger side insert on my lunch break. Took about 30mins start to finish. Ohh the shifting smoothness!!!! Can't wait to get the driver side insert in tonight.

How this job could take 3 hours, I am not sure. I've had the front mount for a little over 4 years now, and I recall it took about 10 mins to install. Perhaps the transmission side is going to be a pain... but I'm not anticipating that.

The funny thing is that I distinctly recall how great of a mod the front mount was. Much reduced wheel hop, and it felt like more of the car's power was being transferred to the wheels. With the addition of the passenger side insert (to my very torn mount) I feel a slight additional reduction in wheel hop and MUCH smoother shifts.

Once again I have to thank AWR for such a great mod! (And thanks to cross over auto dot com for quick shipping and good customer service!)

The transmission mount isn't that big of a pain. It's more a pain because you need to remove things like the battery, battery tray, intake, etc..

I installed Medieval Front, Left & Right mounts a year ago. This past weekend I put back the in a stock front mount. I was just getting too annoyed with the NOISES the rattles and reverberations made. With the two stiff side mounts and stock front & back it is much quieter now and I'm a happy driver. I can feel a bit more engine slop, but it is still more than tight enough for me. It's a great compromise for me.

trans mount usually does take longer then the other 2 up front
i dont know how u get to the rear one, i had my engine out and it still looked like i could fit a socket on the bolts

and matt: AWR sells side and Corksport sells front/rear

It seems pretty much all of the standard vendors are able to get them. No offense to other forum approved vendors, but I've had great success with ************* dot com. They answer their phones and emails... I've called other vendors during operating hours and got answering machines multiple days in a row. Even after leaving messages saying I was going to place a $1000+ order, it still took a week and a half for a callback. Not acceptable in my book. Haven't had similar problems with crossover though.

Just my $.02
