miata vs ae86

a match for what...looks...racing....drag racing...autoX....drifting....?

miatas are excellent autoX cars in proper hands.

i met up with natey last night and he was talking about how he was driving in the hills around milpitas with a bunch of ae86 guys and he totally couldnt keep up with them with his p5. so we were thinking that a miata with an lsd and a good driver could match an AE86 with a good driver

Not discounting Natey's skills, there are many many variables...

I've got a friend w/ a stock P5 who can match just about any miata in our club on a twisty drive.

like i was told when i had my ass handed to be by a 88 FX-16 (twistys and straits). dont underestimate 80's toyota's they were ahead of there timeespecially the AE86, they are very light ( just as light as a miata) and have more power.

No.
The Miata has 125 lbs-ft and 142 hp.

The AE86 has 97 lbs-ft and 115 hp.

The Miata is also perfectly corner weighted and has 50/50 weight distribution.

With a driver that knows how to drive a Miata to its limit (there's a limit?) the AE86 is just too outdated.

I got smoked by a guy in a fully modded AE86 that was drifting around every corner.
I had a 200lb+ passenger and an 80lb sub in a FWD station wagon driving down a steep hill... I was in Understeer City, even with the AWR swaybar.

IMO, A Miata would SMOKE an AE86. I was wishing for Julie's car that night.

The AEs can get pretty crazy once you start adding power.

But then add that FMII, get some race gas and crank the boost. It's all over again.

Now, we know of a local Miata driver with an LSD, the only problem is finding a dude with a AE86. It will probally come down the driver.

Outdated.....LoL

Name another Current production RWD Car that comes Factory with a 5 Link Rear End.....

The 86 is a very impressive Spectical even by todays standards, the Miata is also a very formidable force.

BTW, The 1985+ GTS was Corner Weighted to a Perfect 50/50 weight ratio....So the miata doesnt have that advantage, the only advantage I see in the Miatas favor is it weighs almost nothing with a bit more power.

The GTS Models were Claimed to have 130hp from the Factory, Along with Quick Ratio Power Assist Steering. The Car Corners likes its on Rails, and has more then enough power......

I have personally owned one and drove it on a Track Session where there wasnt much that could keep up with me until we hit the Back Straight at Summit point but I always caught up by Turn 5.

As far as who would win....It would come down to Driver as I feel both cars would make a Pretty Even match...

If only I had the storage space, I'd love to have an old Corolla GTS. They are, indeed, very formidable opponents for the Miata. This thread makes me wish (more) that I had an AE86 in addition to the Miata. I think it'd make an awsome ITA car.
