Hey,

New 5 owner here. This is my first Mazda so forgive my paranoia. When I start my 5, there's a slight metallic ching sound when it's turning over. Is this normal? I've never heard it any other cars I've owned and want to make sure it's not something I should have checked out.

Love the Zoom Zoom so far..... Thanks!!

Agreed - ours has made this noise at start-up since day one - we got our 5 in November and it still makes the same noise to this day - cold or warm temps. I've heard mention of it before, but never an explanation of what it is, and if it is a bad thing. Anyone have the inside line - especially you Mazda dealership guys?
A few minor quirks, other than that the 5 is a sweet drive.

I think...

... you may be referring to the sound of a pully clutch disengaging under the hood/bonnet? Each accessory creates drag on the engine cranking. The power steering pump, AC compressor and alternator can be disengaged to release drag. I haven't yet examined the pulleys on this thing. I'll make a note to look. (nervous)

Yeah the AC compressor makes all sorts of obnoxious noises when I fire 'er up. Seems to quiet down after a little. Hasn't ever concerned me, just an observation.

That could be it (the pully clutch disengaging for starting) - however keep in mind that the 5 supposedly has a electro-hydraulic power steering pump and system (if you turn the wheel at very low/no speed, you can hear the pump whine/buzz- especially from outside the car) to reduce horsepower drag on the engine, so that should not be a source of the startup noise. If someone has the mechanical means or knowledge to verify this noise any further that would be great.

Modern cars/light trucks should have HVAC control module that disengage A/C clutch during start-up regardless position of HVAC selectors.

Mine sound metallic w/ or w/o A/C on.

hhm, ive noticed this too after we bought our 5 in november as well. Figured it was normal even though it sounds like something is about to break ha ha.

yep

My friends mazda 3 has done it since day one, it had me a little concerned but its sounds like its normal from what this thread is reporting.
