Mazdaspeed3 Corksport downpipe questions

I did a search across the ms3 forum, but didn't find all that much.

BasicallyI'm just confirming that I could just buy the corksport downpipe and slap it on with my stock exhaust system. Will I need anything else? or will it not fit at all.

Also, I'm looking for a video or a sound clip of this setup, just a corksport downpipe + regular stock mazdaspeed3 exhaust.

Thanks alot,
Charles.

ps. If this has been asked, I'm sorry for not searching well enough.

I'm definitely no expert (so wait for a second opinion) but I read somewhere that the downpipe with the stock exhaust wouldn't be worth it because the stock exhaust would be such a bottleneck. I might have read this on a retailer website though, so maybe they just wanted to sell more exhaust systems...

Also, it's apparently a real PITA to install.

I think it's also a sure-fire warranty ender since it messes with some sensor (o2?).

Here's a related thread... http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123683412

I have just the corksport DP with all stock DP back exhaust. There is a gain as you remove one catalytic converter (bottleneck) from the system.

There is barely an increase in noise. A little more grumbly deeper tone to it, but very slightly noticeable.

The Corksport DP comes with an O2 sensor extender that pulls the O2 sensor out of the exhaust path and tricks it into thinking there is still a Catalytic converter there which in turn doesnt trip a check engine light.

does this make the entire exhaust system a little longer? (by adding the extender or is that just a name?) would the pg race pipe with the bung have the same principle as the extender? (noob questions i guess but ones i want to know)

the O2 sensor extender only extends the O2 sensor.

the PG racepipe has a bung in it for a totally seperate O2 sensor from a Wideband gauge. For example, http://mazda3online.web.aplus.net/product_info.php?cPath=27_42&products_id=80

So lets say I got the corksport downpipe, and then also the protegegarage test pipe.

Would that help get rid of the restriction and not give me a cel?

Also, if I needed warranty work done, wouldn't it be possible to just swap it back to stock? I'm not worried about the amount of work involved in installing or uninstlaling the downpipe or anything, I feel pretty comfortable and alright doing it.

Also, anyone know what kind of gains I could get?

Eventually I want to get a catback as well, but just not yet. And I'll probably be getting hte mazdaspeed catback just in case I do need warranty work, I Could just swap the stock downpipe and stock cat. converter back on and leave the mazdaspeed exhaust.

I figure this would be the best way because you have to cut the stock exhaust off, and the mazdaspeed exhaust wont void the warranty, correct?

Sorry if I'm asking questions, I'm used to hondas, which are incredibly easy to do anything on.

Again, might just be talking out of my ass here, but I think what you're asking would be technically feasible, but not easy.

The way it sounds to me (a non-mechanic, non-ms3-owner) is that the Downpipe, Cat/Testpipe, and CB Exhaust are 3 separate pieces from the Mazda factory. (Of course, aftermarket CB exhausts may have several individual pieces also.) So it seems perfectly reasonable that if you wanted you could swap the downpipe and cat/testpipe in and out at will.

The downpipe install (and I would assume the de-install) takes at least a couple hours (3 maybe) and involves a bunch of bolts that several members have not been able to get out without a lot of trouble. Hey, maybe you'd get good at it? Seems that the testpipe would be relatively easy.

yes you will be able to change the downpipe and test pipe when you go to dealer also I had a Cel come on so I reset the battery, if it comes back on I'm going to get the code check and if the doenpipe is causing it Ken(ProtegeGarage) will contact Corksport. But the car still runs fine so it dosn't hinder performance. I am happy with the set up so don't let this change your mind.

thanks Nutari for that info - i just wasnt sure what the extender meant or looked like.
i have the corksport catback on my car but because our versions dont have the big booty, my tip sits out further then the MS3's so i didnt want the extender to "extend" the length of my exhaust system.

the extender doesnt extend the length of the exhaust system. it's a small piece of pipe about 4 inches long, about 1/4" inner diameter that screws in where the 2nd O2 sensor would be on the downpipe, then in turn u screw in the 2nd o2 sensor into that extender. It pulls the O2 sensor away from the path of the exhaust gas to fool the sensor that the catalytic converter is still there. I dont know if this is clear enough exmplanation. I'm gonna install mine in two days and I'm F'in excited. I hope my car wont billow with smoke.

Why dont they just use a electronic version with a diode and resistor like the domestics use? CS's way is trying to fool it mechanically which doesnt seem to be working at all. You plug this gadget between the o2 harness and the sensor, whola, no more cel.

As for sound, click my mods list in my sig, it will link you to a video. As for gains, there was a huge gain going from just a CAI to CAI, Corksport Downpipe and Protege Garage Racepipe. I don't have any numbers, but it sure felt faster.

sounds good and very similar to what my corksport catback sounds like. thanks for clearing up the "extender" part, will be completing the exhaust once ive bought suspension mods then probably a piggyback so i dont get cut

.............wheres my million dollar payrise to feed the addiction

yes this DP will bolt up the oem exhaust system just fine, i just installed mine tonight, with my modified stock mid pipe and it works great. Super mod BTW, tons of power especially with cat-less mid pipe.

its about a 2.5-3 hour instal of the DP and shouldnot take any more time for the racepipes install. my idiot light comes on about every other week p0139 which is the second cat.

What have you done to resolve this? I've been getting the P0139 for months. I have tried the diode trick... It decreased the voltage4 but eventualy the light came back. I use alterra to clear it... But its a PITA to keep this up every other week. I took it to the dealer and it turned out that i had a leak right at the DP. They wouldn't touch it... I took it back to my guy that does the work tightened everything up But i still got the the light later on. Cork has been awesome and made a smaller extension that i have not installed yet but this is a pain. (sick)

i think wee need to have a smaller extension installed beacuse i dont think the sensor is getting hot enough. im used to the using the nonfouler plugs on friends srt4 and i dont think his ever came up. well the good news is we dont loose any power off of that light but yeah it is a PITA to cleer it every week but ive kind of come to expect it. If i get ambitious on my thanksgiving break ill send corksport an email and see what the are willing to do to solve the sittuation

Their awesome. I worked with Jason there. He fabed me a shorter extension. I will get it in this weekend..... hopefully..

i thought i'd chime in, installed my CS dp a little over 3 weeks ago, no smokin no cel yet. i think the ecu has adopted to changes. i used the extension that comes with the dp, the original length, it works fine for me. I guess it gets hot enouogh for me. Yeah when i installed it I made sure it's all tight.
