so i bought a used a mazdaspeed shiftknob from a msp owner. it looks awesome and i was told by more than a few people that our knobs were exchangeable with the msp. unless im doing something wrong, this shiftknob does not fit my knob at all, how did anyone get it to fit?
did someone just give me wrong info?
any help would be greatly appreciated

what is it that does not fit about it? the thread pitches are the same...

hmmm maybe im doing something wrong...
it doesnt screw in, it just isnt the same size...

maybe he is having the problem i had with the knob you gave me ken. if you recall, i had a bit of a hard time getting it on. well i took it off and realized it didnt sit on the shifter straight so when i screwed it on it went on slightly (not noticeable when its on) crooked and made its own thread in the urethane. its not a big deal and doesnt appear to be crooked, but its a PITA to take off.

thats def not the problem.
as a matter of fact there is no urethane so i cant screw it on. the shaft is too thin for the knob.

oh. dammit, i was hoping i wasnt the only one idiotic enough to do something like that ;)

hopefully you didnt pay too much for that knob

s*** dude it dont work? i just figured it did since others said it would and it said it does on protegegarage..i have no clue why it wouldnt?!

hey man. yeah it is supposed to fit. even Ken from protegegarage says it fits, and he sells them so there must be somethign wrong or im just totally retarded.
do you have another piece that came with it?
I noticed my stock knob has a plastic insert which is the one that has the thread that screws right onto the shaft and this knob doesnt have one and its much thicker than the shaft so it just doesnt screw in.
anyone with any help?

thats me actually :)

i have used a p5 knob, protege knob, msp knob, rx7 knob, mazda6 knob and mazda3 knob on my stock shifter, my rx7 shifter and my b&m shifter. tried them all and all fit without a hitch, threaded right on. the only thing i can think of is that there is something wrong with that knob or something about the stock shifter in your car which is preventing it from going down.

ok i need some help since im pretty confused.

the shaft is too thin (i know this because the knob wobbles on the shaft). if this is the case i dont know how they would fit the 3 knob on the MSP shaft.

you say that there maybe something on my shifter preventing the knob from going down, but that is not true; the knob goes fine on top but since the shaft is too thin you cant screw it on, it just sits there.

I may be doing something wrong but i would like to hear opinions

heres some pics of the knob and a vid i took of me putting it on the stock shifter for you to compare. wish i would have known you were having problems on friday cuz we had a 3 at our protege meet and i could have tried it out on the 3's knob for ya.
im trying to upload the video right now..........google vid takes a lil time. and putfile is out for maintenance.

its not stripped heads cause there is no contact between the knob and the shaft.
architect, tahnk for the help. i'll wait for the linky to the video.
thanks!

Is your MSP knob the short stubby sparco one? Or the taller one that the 03 MSPs came with?

oh i got excited for a minute there.
it is a different knob than the one i have.
again, there must be something wrong because the hole in the msp knob is much bigger than the one in my stock knob

When i got my taller MSP one, it didn't fit my kartboy shifter, which is exactly the same threadpitch as the rest of the protege shifters. So what i did with mine is i got some of that plastic tubing, the one thats reinforced, shoved that inside the shift knob, and then when i threaded that onto the shifter it created its own threads on the plastic. now it fits like a glove.

i think thats what i have to do. where did you get that plastic tubing?

anyone else with some more suggestions?
